Belmont Aerial - Melvic Theatre and surrounding area. Date Unknown.

Melvic Theatre located on the corner of Macquarie Street and Pacific Highway. Houses seen on the block encompassing Macquarie and Thomas Streets demolished and replaced by Coles carpark.

Melvic Theatre - Pacific Hwy. Belmont

This Melvic Theatre (the second Melvic Theatre) was built on the corner of the Pacific Highway and Macquarie Street Belmont. It opened in 1939 and closed in 1964. After closing the building was converted into shops and offices.
The building is still standing and occupied by businesses. Businesses include LJ Ho**er Real Estate, located on the ground floor and a dance academy on the first floor.

Research Request - Cabbage-Tree Hats

The Society has received a request for assistance from a PhD student researching the history of cabbage-tree hat making in Australia.

Information is required regarding cabbage-tree hat making in the early days of Lake Macquarie. It is known that this type of hat making was undertaken by some of the women of the area and the Chinese settlers.
