Catholic Earthcare Australia The Ecological Agency for the Catholic Church in Australia | Caring for our Common Home with 'Laudato Si' at its heart

Catholic Earthcare is a program of Caritas Australia undertaking ecological justice projects for the Catholic Church in Australia. Our purpose is to enable a loving and sustainable relationship with the natural world through environmental education, research, national networks, advocacy and transformation. Through our work, including key initiatives such as Earthcare Schools and Earthcare Parishes

, we promote the understanding that our environment is sacred and endangered and must be protected and sustained for present and future generations. We invite all people to journey with us in the most critical and urgent of tasks – of safeguarding the integrity of Creation, acting on climate change, protecting Earth’s fragile ecosystems and providing a voice for the victims of environmental degradation, injustice and pollution.

🌍 World Day to Combat Desertification & Drought 🌱

Rangelands – Recognize. Respect. Restore.

Covering more than half of the world’s land surface*, rangelands (grasslands, savannas, shrublands) support the lives of around two billion people worldwide. They provide almost 70% of livestock feed globally, making them critical to food systems.

🌱Up to half of the world’s rangelands are degraded or at risk*🌱

Once soil is exposed and weakened (driven by factors like climatic variations and overgrazing), erosion and drought can prevent the retention of water and nutrients, turning productive rangelands into degraded, desert-like landscapes.

It’s time to:
🌿 Recognize the value of rangelands,
🌿 Respect and support their traditional stewards, pastoralists and Indigenous Peoples, and
🌿 Restore these landscapes for future generations.

Pope Francis challenged us to “dare to turn what is happening to the world into our own personal suffering and thus to discover what each of us can do about it.” (Laudato Si’ n19)

💧 Healthy land. Strong communities. Resilient future.

Right now in Bonn, Germany, global climate talks are underway and Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is there, making sure the voices of our communities are heard.

Our friend and colleague Martin de Jong stepped spoke at a United Nations press conference alongside Catholic partners from around the world. Representing Caritas Oceania, he brought our region’s perspective into the global conversation on climate finance.

Climate finance is not charity, it is justice. Communities across the Pacific and beyond are already facing the impacts of climate change, rising seas, extreme weather, and threats to livelihoods and culture despite contributing least to the crisis.

Caritas is calling for:
Fair and accessible climate finance (focused on grants, not loans)
A just transition away from fossil fuels
Real support for communities facing loss and damage
Climate action rooted in dignity, solidarity, and care for our common home

These conversations can be technical and complex but at their heart, they are about people, justice, and our shared future.

🌏 Listening to Creation on World Environment Day 💚

On this World Environment Day, we’re invited to pay attention to what our world is saying. Our changing climate is an urgent cry for action, and our world is listening for our response.

Pope Francis reminded us that love “makes itself felt in every action that seeks to build a better world” (Laudato Si’ 231). Wherever we find ourselves, let’s continue to answer our world’s cries with care, kindness and generosity, and be part of healing and restoring all of creation.
