Media Statement: *Government's MotoGP plans reveal far greater destruction than previously disclosed*

The South Australian Government has confirmed, for the first time, the true scale of the permanent damage proposed for Adelaide's National Heritage-listed Park Lands.

The detailed plans reveal that up to 400 trees are proposed for removal, together with extensive permanent construction through Victoria Park/Pakapakanthi to create what is, in reality, a permanent motorsport circuit.

Adelaide Park Lands Association President Mat Monti said the announcement has fundamentally changed the public debate.

"For the first time South Australians can see exactly what is proposed, and it is significantly worse than many expected."

"This is no longer about a temporary sporting event. It is about permanently transforming one of Australia's most important heritage landscapes for an event that will be held for only a few days each year under an initial six-year contract."

"The release of these plans confirms what tens of thousands of South Australians have been saying for months; this race is in the wrong place."

Also revealed are the project costs of almost $100 million in construction alone.

"Governments should not spend almost $100 million of taxpayers' money during a cost of living crisis, to permanently alter National Heritage-listed Park Lands without first publishing an independent environmental impact assessment and a comprehensive cost benefit analysis demonstrating the economic value," Mat Monti said.

In another blow to the people of South Australia, still sorely missing from the Government's announcement is a chance for genuine community consultation.

Instead, South Australians have been given just three weeks to comment on plans involving the permanent removal of almost 400 trees and irreversible changes to Adelaide's internationally recognised Park Lands.

There are no public meetings or even a phone number. It is unclear whether email submissions will be allowed, or even submissions from community groups.

"This is poor consultation from a Government who throughout this process has demonstrated the opposite of transparency and good governance," Mat Monti said.

“The Adelaide Park Lands Association is calling on every South Australian who values the Park Lands to examine the plans carefully and make a submission to this government outlining how much they oppose the proposal.”

Thank you to Save West Beach Sand for this analysis of the costs associated with the Recycling Sand Pipe. The figure for this is much lower than what was previously stated.

Even after including 20 years of operating costs, the published pipeline total to Largs North is $137.6–$144.9 million, 🚩still $45.1–$52.4 million below the Government’s $190 million dredging program.

Permanent recycling infrastructure, with no marine dredging, seabed excavation or dredging plume tripled by rehandling at West and Henley's beaches.

Thank you to Crab.e.cam for these images of under the ocean at Glenelg. As reported the marine life and surrounds have been badly impacted although there are some signs of slow recovery.

HENLEY BEACH SOUTH - DUNE and ENVIRONMENT NURTURING DAY - 13th September, 2026. The dune system is looking good after the rain, however, there are lots of w**ds. A good time to pull them out as the sand is soft. The erosion control coils that we put in place are continuing to do their job and it is good to see that the native nasturtiums are spreading of their own accord. There are many ways in which we can nurture our environment - pull out w**ds, replace signage and pick up rubbish. We would love some help. Why not come along and get some fresh sea air and light exercise? Please wear covered shoes and protect yourself from the sun. We can provide gloves, spades, w**ding tools, pop up w**d containers etc.
We will meet at 9.30 on the coastal path opposite 133 Esplanade, Henley Beach South, and finish at 11.00 am. Hope to see you there.

How will sea grass along our coast stand up to the high levels of pollutants that are entering the ocean?

HENLEY BEACH SOUTH - Polluted water from the Torrens Outlet is not the only source of pollution. Pollution also flows from the storm water outlets like this one opposite Henley Beach Road. Turning a blind eye to these issues will not make them go away nor will it improve the health and cleanliness of our coastal environment. We can do better.
