Happy New Month – June

As we begin a new month, let us choose support over stigma and care over discrimination.

ZCLDN Champions Drug Use and LA PREP Awareness: City of Harare Wellness Funfair

The visit by Acting Mayor Councillor Mujajati to Zimbabwe Civil Liberties and Drug Network (ZCLDN) exhibition booth became one of the standout moments at the City of Harare 2026 Employees Wellness Funfair held yesterday, 22 May 2026. The visit highlighted growing recognition of ZCLDN’s work in addressing drug and substance use, promoting healthier lifestyles and advancing HIV prevention in communities.
The wellness funfair brought together City of Harare employees, health practitioners, community organisations, financial institutions, universities and wellness experts in an event focused on promoting employee health and well-being. The programme featured sporting and recreational activities including Zumba, tug of war, netball, soccer and tennis to encourage physical fitness, teamwork and mental wellness.

Throughout the event, ZCLDN engaged more than 50 employees and participants on drug and substance use, mental health and the importance of Long-Acting PrEP (LA PrEP) as a new HIV prevention option for people at risk of HIV infection. Many participants expressed interest in understanding how LA PrEP works and its role in strengthening HIV prevention efforts in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Civil Liberties and Drug Network (ZCLDN) has noted with deep concern a recent media story exposing horrific abuses, torture, sexual violence, unlawful confinement and inhumane treatment of people who use and inject drugs, allegedly perpetrated at an illegal rehabilitation center operating in
Emganwini, Bulawayo. Following the publication of the story, ZCLDN strongly condemns the disturbing reports of physical assault, emotional torture, r**e and degrading treatment of people who use and inject drugs seeking support for drug dependence. These alleged acts are deeply alarming and constitute serious violations of human rights and public health standards.

If you discover that your child is using drugs, how you respond can shape their future. Choosing anger and punishment can push them further away but choosing empathy, conversation and support can open the door to healing.
Let us create safe spaces at home and in schools where young people feel heard, supported and guided.

Seek counselling and rehabilitation. Recovery is possible.

ZCLDN joined the Independence Day celebrations on 18 April in Maphisa, using the platform to engage communities on drug and substance use, harm reduction and HIV prevention with a strong emphasis on Long-Acting PrEP as a transformative prevention option.

Through our information tent, we created a safe, welcoming and interactive space where community members could learn about the effects of drugs and how to support peers affected by drug use. Our outreach team also adopted a dynamic and flexible approach, moving through the crowds to engage directly with people and distribute educational materials.

Community members were encouraged to take proactive steps in protecting their health by regularly testing for HIV, using condoms consistently, accessing Long-Acting PrEP if at higher risk and seeking timely medical care when unwell.
