FROM A CELLPHONE CHESSBOARD TO U16 GOLD: TADIWANASHE TAPERA’S RISE
At just 15, Tadiwanashe Tapera is already making his mark on Zimbabwe’s chess scene, combining competitive success with leadership, academic interests and a clear ambition for the future.
Tadiwanashe was crowned the 2026 Under-16 Chess Champion after winning the Gold Medal in the U16 Boys Development Section at the Minerva Zimbabwe Open Chess Tournament (21st - 23rd of August).
His chess journey began humbly in Grade 4 at Rusununguko Primary School in Mufakose, where he was largely self-taught and practised using a cellphone. His growing interest soon saw him represent the school in zonal chess competitions.
Away from the chessboard, Tadiwanashe also emerged as a young leader. He served as a Prefect in Grade 5, Vice Headboy in Grade 6 and Headboy in Grade 7.
He began playing chess competitively in Form 1 and is now a student at Mufakose 1 High School, where he has been appointed a prefect. Beyond chess, he is a member of the school’s Quiz Club, reflecting interests that extend beyond the board.
Tadiwanashe is an affiliate of the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) and a member of Knights Chess Academy, where he receives mentorship from coach John Chibvuri. He also regularly competes in tournaments, in Harare.
Inspired by his favourite chess player, Magnus Carlsen, Tadiwanashe hopes to continue pursuing chess while building a future as an entrepreneur.
For a young player who began by learning chess on a cellphone, the journey to national U16 gold is a powerful reminder of what can happen when talent is matched with discipline, persistence and consistency.
Tadiwanashe’s message to fellow young people is simple: persist, remain consistent and keep pursuing your goals — the effort will eventually pay off.
The board is set. The journey continues.
