Atwaambe Initiative Atwaambe Initiative is an agriculture-centred nonprofit communication organisation which operates in Zambia.

Atwaambe Initiative turns radio into a catalyst for agricultural innovation, helping smallholder farmers in Zambia grow smarter, adapt to climate change, and prosper. As a communication organisation Atwaambe Initiative prides itself in providing smallholder farmers with easy-to-understand information in agriculture practice. We work with radio producers and presenters and various knowledge experts

. Our approach encompasses a multi-faceted strategy that involves the integration of radio, hands-on trainings, knowledge-sharing networks and platforms, and capacity-strengthening initiatives for smallholder farmers. Atwaambe is a Tonga (one of the languages in Zambia) word translated as “Let’s talk.” The name is born from the fact that most challenges are resolved when concerned parties sit down together to talk about the same. We believe that there is a need to have a platform for continuous engagement where experts, smallholder farmers, broadcasters, government officials and development organisations can sit together and chat the way forward on issues of agriculture in a planned, coordinated and organised manner. Atwaambe Initiative catalyses a network of various knowledge experts to research, plan, produce, and evaluate carefully designed, radio-based and gender-responsive communications, which achieve different outcomes including but not limited to: awareness, knowledge, adoption of good practices, market linkages, and changes in attitude and behaviour.

🎉 EXCITING NEWS FROM ATWAAMBE INITIATIVE! 🎉

We are proud to announce that Atwaambe Initiative is now an official nonprofit partner of GlobalGiving, the world’s first and largest global fundraising community connecting nonprofits, donors, and companies.

This partnership marks an important milestone in our journey to empower smallholder farmers and strengthen agriculture broadcasting in Zambia. Through GlobalGiving, we will be able to reach a wider network of supporters, mobilise more resources, and expand our impact in building resilient farming communities and improving livelihoods.

ROOTED IN HOPE: GROWING A GREENER FUTURE, ONE TREE AT A TIME

As we mark World Environment Day 2026, we celebrate the actions that give us hope for a healthier planet and a more resilient future.

For John Siakaoma, one of Atwaambe Initiative’s smallholder farmers in Choma, hope is found in planting agroforestry trees in his field.

Through agroforestry, farmers are restoring the environment, improving soil health, protecting biodiversity, and building resilience against the impacts of climate change.

At Atwaambe Initiative, we believe that caring for the environment is not separate from improving livelihoods, it is the foundation for sustainable agriculture, food security, and stronger communities.

This year’s theme, "Now For Climate", reminds us that the time to act is now. Inspired by nature, we can create solutions that protect our climate and secure a better future for generations to come.

Biodiversity is the foundation of all life on Earth, yet it’s disappearing faster than ever. This year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact,” reminds us that meaningful change starts right where we are.

At Atwaambe Initiative, we’re committed to growing a greener future with Zambia’s smallholder farmers. Through our radio programmes, we share knowledge that empowers farmers to protect and restore biodiversity.

And by providing a local tree; musangu (Faidherbia albida) seedlings, we help communities enrich their soils, boost crop yields, and build climate-resilient farms.

Every musangu tree planted is a step toward healthier ecosystems, stronger livelihoods, and a more sustainable Zambia.

Over 80% of the farmers we work with choose to farm as a family unit; planting together, planning together, and growing together. From early morning field visits to joyful harvest moments, farming becomes more than labour… it becomes teamwork, partnership, and legacy building.

🌳 Growing Trees. Growing Hope. 🌳

“I came to the first meeting expecting relief food… but instead we were trained to plant Musangu (Faidherbia Albida) for agroforestry. Now I am proudly growing 50 trees.” - Webster Simakwama, Choma.

Agroforestry is more than planting and growing trees, it restores soils, boosts yields, protects farms from climate shocks, and gives farmers long-term independence.

Smallholder farmers feed the nation, yet still face high costs, weak markets, and recurring climate stress. These are not surface issues; they are structural barriers.

That’s why our work combines field sustainable farming training with radio broadcasting, turning information into action and ensuring farmers lead the solutions that shape their future.

🌱 This International Seed Day, Atwaambe Initiative stands with farmers, communities, and custodians of our indigenous seed heritage.

Seed sovereignty is not just about agriculture, it's about food security, cultural identity, climate resilience, and the right of farmers to determine their own futures.

❌ Let us not criminalise traditional farming practices by restricting farmers’ rights to save, share, and sell their own seeds.
❌ Let us not undermine biodiversity and climate resilience by promoting genetically uniform seeds at the expense of diverse, locally adapted varieties.
❌ Let us not reduce seeds to a mere commodity, seeds carry culture, knowledge, ecology and intergenerational wisdom.
