As we head into Youth Month, I’ve been thinking a lot about the legacy we are leaving behind. It’s easy to tell the next generation how to lead, how to be resilient, and how to find grit. But the hard truth is that they don’t just listen to what we say, they watch how we act.

We owe it to the future to be leaders who are constantly learning and growing. When we model honest self-reflection, we show the next generation that true success isn't about being perfect, it’s about having the courage to evolve.

Let’s set the standard this week. What is one habit you need to reflect on and change for the benefit of those following you?

As we commemorate Youth Day, we are reminded that the challenges facing South Africa’s youth remain significant. With youth unemployment exceeding 37,6 % and many young people still lacking access to opportunities, the need for meaningful action has never been greater.

At Laureus Sport for Good South Africa, we have seen the power of sport to create change. Through more than 30 programmes, we have impacted over 45,000 lives and supported over 2,000 youth employment opportunities.

Long-term impact is not easy, but it is our goal to strengthen our communities.

Happy Youth Day, South Africa from all of us at Laureus Sport for Good South Africa.

This past Saturday, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa team got out and practiced what we preach; we used sport as a tool to connect, to unite and to be part of something meaningful.

We joined hundreds of other walkers and runners at the Cape Town Marathon's 5km Peace Run, a powerful reminder of what sport truly stands for. When you run alongside your community, regardless of background, age, or ability, something shifts. Sport has a unique way of making us cohesive, and moments like these are proof.

With Cape Town as the backdrop, leaders in social enterprise development and community impact came together at the Laureus Hub Connect Summit to explore what meaningful and sustainable impact truly looks like.

The panel featured Aasiyah Adams from Abaguquli4IR and Abaguquli NPC, Clifford Martinus from Oasis-Reach for your dreams, Hanli Prinsloo from I Am Water Ocean Conservation, and Fiona Cooper from WomenWin, who shared powerful insights on youth development, social innovation, gender equity, education, and driving long-term change within communities.

If you joined us on the day, which insight stopped you in your tracks? Share it in the comments.

At our Laureus Cape Town Hub Connect Summit, Aasiyah Adams challenged organisations to “not be afraid to make money.”

Her message pushed the social impact sector to rethink sustainability and recognise that purpose and financial growth can work together. When NPOs build sustainable organisations, they strengthen their ability to serve communities, create opportunities, and drive long-term impact.

Alongside Nolo Mokoena from Ori Sports Co, JP Duminy called on leaders to embrace collaboration, innovation, bold leadership, and community-driven solutions to shape a stronger future for the sector.

Together, these conversations spark new ways of thinking and encourages honest reflection.

One of the standout moments and setting the tone was hearing Chairperson share a powerful reminder of the role sport can play in transforming lives and creating hope.

Reflecting on how the 1995 Rugby World Cup shaped his aspirations and worldview, Bryan spoke about sport’s unique ability to unite communities across racial and socioeconomic divides and inspire lasting social change.

Some of the key takeaways:
1. Sport has the power to inspire, connect and transform communities.
2. Sustainable impact requires collaboration between NGOs, corporates, funders and communities.
3. Passion alone is not enough and organisations need funding, systems, skills and operational capacity to thrive.

Bryan also commended the incredible work of the Laureus South Africa team, led by for reaching more than 40,000 young people through sport despite limited resources.

His closing message was a powerful call to action: stay engaged, keep learning, share knowledge and continue building a better future for the next generation of South Africans.

One of the strongest messages from today’s session was clear:NPOs do not need to choose between impact and sustainability, they can achieve both.

The conversation challenged organisations to rethink traditional funding models and embrace a more entrepreneurial, outcomes-driven approach to social impact.

The future of the sector lies in collaboration, innovation, adaptability and bold thinking.

A beautiful morning was spent at Muizenberg beach!
A surfing competition, partners in and an NGO, waves higher than we’ve seen in quite some time. “Sport has the power to change the world.”

Surfers, paddlers, of our funded programmes, companies coming together, games on the beach and electric bikes moving up and down the walkway. That was our Saturday morning as our Laureus Sport for Good Foundation team supported the incredible 100 Waves programme.
The concept is simple: catch 100 waves in a single day and raise funds to support at-risk youth in South Africa’s coastal communities. From surf therapy and mentorship to education and safe spaces, every wave ridden has the power to change a young person’s life.

What a gorgeous day and a powerful reminder of how sport can be used as a tool for social change.

We spent the day in the Shark Tank!

Thank you to the and Durban Stadium for hosting our Laureus Sport for Good Foundation team and supporting this important step forward for sport-for-development in South Africa.

Last week, we officially launched our 2026 Incubation Hub, bringing together six Sport for Development organisations for an intensive six-month journey focused on strengthening sustainability, accelerating organisational growth, and becoming fund-ready.

Our first module tackled governance and financial SOPs for NPOs, equipping organisations with the structures they need to build with confidence and scale with purpose.

This is what investing in the future of looks like.
