Winter always requires some creativity when it comes to entertainment at the clubhouse. With the track unridable after heavy rains, the kids have to resort to games in the afternoons. If you have any board games or art supplies you'd like to donate, drop them off at any Specialized Bicycles store in the Western Cape or swing by the clubhouse in Kayamandi.

songo Tots to brighten up your Monday.

The Tots programme has brought us so much joy at songo.info. Watching them learn to ride bikes, and helping them learn has been one of the greatest success stories of the programme in the last two years.

On Saturday, 23 May 2026, 10 children, along with coach Ntlantla Nonkasa, travelled to Rhebokskloof Wine Estate in Paarl to take part in the Western Cape Schools Cycling XCO Series. songo.info was represented by Awethu Mtekeli, Akho Mayekiso, Mihlali Stuurman, Yongama Mdletye, Zinam Seti, Avuyile Relegusha, and Thembelihle Nzila. Sadly, Khanya Ovayo had Saturday classes and was therefore unable to race.

"Despite the nerves at the start line, the kids settled quickly and rode with focus," Ntlantla Nonkasa praised. "The U12 riders and U14 riders pushed through the tough laps without walking, showing real grit on the steep climbs and control coming down technical sections on the descents."

"What stood out the most for me was the character the kids showed. When a few got knocks, crashed, or got distanced by the lead group, they did not drop their heads but reset and kept on going until the end. I was so happy with the results the kids achieved and how they represented the songo.info programme."

The kids left Rhebokskloof tired but proud. Each rider raced hard, supported their teammates, and walked away wanting to come back for more.

Thank you to the sponsors of songo.info who made the trip to XCO races across the Western Cape possible. They include Ninety One, Specialized Bicycles, Biogen, and the Western Cape Cycling Association. Without this generosity, it would not be possible to compete in these events.

The 8th leg of the WC BMX Provincial points series took place at Kraaifontein BMX track on Sunday, the 24th May. The Kraaifontein BMX committee did a great job getting the track race ready after the heavy rains the Western Cape experienced recently, and fortunately, the weather on race day was perfect.

The songo.info team chosen for this race consisted of 14 kids of varying ages and racing experience levels. 4 of these songo riders had never raced a BMX before, so it was a great opportunity for them to experience the competitive side of the sport for the first time. BMX racing is often a stepping stone into other cycling disciplines and is also a great way to learn bike handling skills.

The 14 songo.info kids were accompanied by Asisipho, Svig, Nomvulo, and Brad. They arrived at the track early on Sunday morning and quickly began with the pre-race preparation. It requires some time and patience to get 14 excited kids to stand still to fit numbers boards and timing transponders to each one of their bikes, and also to make sure that they all have the correct gear and that their helmets are properly fastened. With the admin organised the team and the coaches all headed to the start gate for official practice, followed by the team ride-by.

Straight after the team ride-by, the racing began. In the end, the songo.info team had a good day at the track with a few of our first-time racers finishing on the podium in the novice category. The team had some older, more experienced racers finish in the top 3 in their age groups. "I was happy with how the team behaved and the way in which each person represented songo.info," Brad Stow praised. "There are definitely a few areas where we can improve and ways in which we can make the day run smoother for the kids and the songo staff, but this will come with time, as the less experienced riders become familiar with the race-day routines."

Thank you to our sponsors Ninety One, Specialized Bikes, and Clicks for their continued support of the songo.info programme. Also, thank you to all the friends of songo.info who help and support us in some way or another. Without this support, we would not be able to attend these awesome events.
