Our football team, SAMTRA UNITED, were among those invited to participate in the African Marine Solutions Maritime Industry Soccer Tournament held on Saturday, 9 May 2026 at Fives Futbol, Century City.

According to team captain, Charlton:

"On behalf of my team i would like to express our sincere appreciation to SAMTRA - SA Maritime Training Academy for making it possible for the team to participate in this event.

"Special thanks to Capt. Pieter Coetzer for organizing the teamโ€™s participation and ensuring that everything was well coordinated.

"Also to Coach Junayne Baatjes for his guidance and encouragement throughout the tournament, and to the entire SAMTRA team for their support and for contributing to a positive and memorable experience.

"The tournament provided an excellent opportunity to build teamwork, strengthen relationships within the maritime industry, and enjoy healthy competition."

According to Charlton, Samtra's first two matches ended in a draw. The team then won their third game, but unfortunately missed out on qualifying for knockouts after being defeafed in their final group match.

"Notwithstanding the loss, we found the experience both rewarding and memorable and look forward to future events that continue to promote unity, wellness, and comradeship within the maritime sector."

Thank you team for doing us proud and thanks to AMSOL for hosting!

From Angola to the global maritime industry, Abel De Oliveira Danielโ€™s journey shows how education can transform a career.

As a Mooring Master and Marine Pilot at Chevron, Abel has spent years building hands-on experience at sea. But he believes growth never stops. Thatโ€™s why he chose to study a BSc Maritime Business qualification through the Business College of Athens, supported by SAMTRA.

Why continue studying? Because the maritime industry is constantly changing and education helps professionals stay relevant, grow their careers and contribute to safer and more efficient operations.

Abel hopes his journey inspires more African mariners to invest in their futures. โ€œInvesting in education is one of the best ways to grow professionally. The maritime industry is evolving rapidly and, having both practical experience and academic qualifications, opens doors to global opportunities.โ€
