Cwsa: Toekomsrus

Cwsa: Toekomsrus Child Welfare South Africa is the umbrella, development, capacity building and coordinating body for CWSA: Toekomsrus.

CWSA: Toekomsrus was established in 1998 as a Not-for-profit organisation that works closely with the South African Government Departmen Toekomsrus is situated in Randfontein in the West Rand. In 2009, a community profile was done by the organisation and there is approximately 73 000 people living in Toekomsrus, Dumping Site and Westergloor. The biggest problems in this community are Drug and alco

hol abuse, unemployment, HIV/AIDS, lack of housing, crime and neglect / child abuse. The need to render child, family and community centered services in order to build the capacities and promote the development of all the people in our area of operation has increased. The social effects of HIV/AIDS on the lives of children are well known - children no longer attending school or turned away because of no school fees and/or uniforms; the girl child staying home to care and do household chores; children taking on adult responsibilities; inheritance problems and children being evicted from their homes; the potential for exploitation and abuse; children caring for the sick and dying; children unable to access their social rights because of no guardian and/or no official documentation and issues of survival and trauma for children. To assist with all these problems is problematic in that the organisation is overburden with statutory work, increased client loads, the new children’s act and administrative responsibilities. The shortage of funds and present economical situation has made it difficult for the organisation to raise funds for various projects.
