At Home from Home, we believe that every child deserves to grow up in a safe, loving family environment. When children feel secure, supported, and truly heard, they are empowered to speak out and seek help when something is wrong.

Creating these safe spaces at home, in communities, and across our society, is a shared responsibility. Reporting abuse is not just important, it is life changing. It helps protect children, break cycles of harm, and build a future where every child can thrive.

Let’s stand together to ensure that every child feels seen, believed, and protected.

Families are at the centre of child protection. When children feel safe, supported and heard at home and in their communities, they are more likely to speak out against abuse. Reporting abuse is critical to protecting children and stopping the cycle of violence. Let us create safe spaces where every child feels seen, believed and protected.

Every child deserves love, protection, care, education, and a voice.

At Home from Home, we are committed to helping build a South Africa where every child is safe, heard, and empowered to thrive.

Together, we can create nurturing spaces where children feel valued, supported, and free to grow into their full potential. Let’s continue to protect, uplift, and advocate—not just this month, but every day.

Because every child matters. Always.

Every child deserves love, protection, care, education, and a voice. Let us continue to build a South Africa where children are safe, heard, and empowered to thrive. 💚

Social workers are guardians of hope.

They walk alongside the children in our care daily, advocating for their rights, supporting families and providing emotional care.

This Child Protection Month, we honour the dedicated social workers who support our foster mothers and children and help make our foster homes places of healing, safety, and hope. Your work matters more than words can say. Thank you.

Happy Mother's Day to our remarkable foster mothers!
There are many kinds of mothers in this world. And then there is you.

You chose this. You opened your heart, and your life to children who have experienced so much loss. You love them on the hard days, and keep showing up consistently.

On this Mother's Day, we want you to know that what you do changes the course of a child's entire life. The children in your care may not yet have the words for it, but one day they will look back and know that you were the person who made all the difference.

Thank you for being their home.
With love, The Home from Home Family

Nobody protects a child alone.

At Home from Home, our foster homes are built inside the communities where our children come from. They grow up hearing their own language, surrounded by people who understand their culture and who they are. That's not a small thing. For a child who has already lost so much, it means everything.

But we couldn't do any of it without the communities who show up alongside us, consistently, quietly, and without being asked. The neighbours, the local churches, the ordinary people who help us give vulnerable children a second chance at family.

This Child Protection Month, we want to say thank you to every person who has ever looked out for a child that wasn't theirs. You are part of this, more than you know.

And if you see a child who needs help, say something. Do something. Be the person who didn't look away.

That's how children get protected. Not by systems. By people.

A child doesn't always say "I need help."

Sometimes they go quiet. Stop eating. Stop playing. Stop being themselves.

Sometimes they flinch when you reach for them. Sometimes they cling to you and won't let go.

Sometimes their school marks drop, or they stop wanting to go altogether.

These are not phases to wait out. These are signals — and they matter.

This Child Protection Month, we're asking everyone to slow down and look a little closer at the children around them. At home. In your street. In your community.

You don't have to be a social worker to make a difference. You just have to care enough to act.

This year, the Department of Social Development calls on all of us to work together to end violence against children. It’s a theme we don’t visit once a year, it guides our work every single day.

Child protection isn’t only a policy or a campaign. For the children in our homes, it’s a foster mother who provides love and a second chance at family, a safe place where our children can grow up knowing someone is there for them, no matter what.

South Africa is home to an estimated 2.8 million orphaned children. Every one of them deserves to be safe, loved, and truly seen, not just in May, but always.

This month, we stand alongside the Department of Social Development, and with every organisation, family, and community working to protect our children. Because working together is the only way forward.

Too many children in South Africa are starting their school journey already at a disadvantage.

Recent findings show that 15% of Grade 3 learners can’t read a single word, and only about 30% of children in Grades 1–3 are reading at the level they should be. [ News24.com ]

At Home from Home, we’re doing everything we can to shift this reality for the children in our care.

Our Education Programme makes sure every child is in the right school, equipped with uniforms, stationery and safe transport.

Through our partnership with Surfpop, our children benefit from a structured after-school programme that runs five days a week.

They spend two afternoons surfing and swimming, building confidence, resilience and joy.

On the other three days, they join the education module, which includes homework support, Maths and English tutoring, My Reading Gym for improving reading skills, and weekly workshops focused on vocational skills, environmental awareness and life coaching.

All of this is supported by Surfpop’s nutrition module, which provides daily nutritious meals and nutrition education — a vital foundation for learning.

These opportunities help children feel capable, motivated and proud of themselves again.

With the right care, consistency, and community behind them, children can become healthy and well-adjusted adults who contribute positively to society.

We’re celebrating a 100% Matric Pass Rate!

We are so proud of our matriculants, who have all passed their 2025 exams - a remarkable achievement and a testament to their resilience, hard work, and determination.

Home from Home is committed to striving for improved educational levels for all our children, who have faced trauma, instability, and systemic barriers to learning. That’s why our model goes beyond providing a safe and loving family environment — we ensure every child is placed in the right school and receives ongoing academic support.

These results are proof that when children are nurtured, supported, and given the tools they need to succeed, they thrive.

Thank you to our foster mothers, partners, social workers, tutors, and supporters who make moments like this possible.

Celebrating 20 Years of Family, Fun & Joy!
On 9 December, we gathered for our Annual Family Fun Day Christmas Party - and this year was extra special as we marked Home from Home’s 20th anniversary!

This tradition is all about bringing our foster children and mothers together for a day filled with laughter, love, and connection. A true celebration of the family spirit that defines who we are.

We headed to Graceland Venues Paarl , a magical venue with something for everyone: thrilling slides, splash pads, sparkling pools, and a whimsical play area for the little ones. The day overflowed with smiles, shared meals, and moments that reminded us why community matters.

Our Family Fun Day isn’t just an event—it’s a chance for families to relax, bond, and create memories that last a lifetime. For many, it’s a rare opportunity to set aside challenges and simply enjoy being part of a caring, supportive network.

As we wrap up this incredible year, we’re deeply grateful to everyone who made this celebration possible, especially our donors who supported the event.
