Ahead of South Africa’s local government elections in November, Africa Check, Moxxi Africa and the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) are hosting a FREE two-day, in-person elections reporting workshop in Cape Town.

The practical workshop will cover:

🔎 How to spot and debunk false information online
✅ How to apply fact-checking techniques to everyday reporting
🗳️ The role of the media during elections
🛡️ Safety of journalists

SANEF Condemns Attempt to Intimidate Journalist at Madlanga Commission of Enquiry

The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) has strongly condemned an attempt to bully and intimidate Sowetan journalist, Herman Moloi who was covering the Madlanga Commission.

In the course of his reporting duties, Moloi had filmed KwaZulu-Natal businessman Stuart Scharnick at the commission today as he was speaking to MP, Fadiel Adams, during a tea break.

According to Sowetan, Scharnick then approached Moloi aggressively, accusing him of filming without his express permission. Scharnick had earlier in the day accused Moloi of posting videos of him on TikTok without his permission.

It’s understood that Moloi believed that comment to be a joke as he does not have a TikTok account.

During the tea break, Scharnick again confronted Moloi and instructed him to stop filming him without permission. Moloi said Scharnick then threateningly suggested they go outside.

Statement: Indigenous Languages Seminar Ends with National Call to Use Home Languages with Pride

The 4th Indigenous Languages and the Media Seminar concluded at the University of Fort Hare’s East London Campus, KuGompo, with a clarion call for South Africans to embrace and promote their home languages across all communication and media platforms, particularly on social media.

The seminar, held under the theme “Rooted in Language: Indigenous Media as a Platform for Belonging and Cultural Continuity,” brought together approximately 150 delegates, including journalists, editors, language practitioners, traditional leaders, academics, journalism students, community media publishers and civil society language activists from across South Africa.

Hosted by the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF), in partnership with the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB), the University of Fort Hare, and the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), the seminar explored the future of indigenous languages in the media, the challenges posed by the digital age and artificial intelligence, and strategies to strengthen indigenous-language journalism and content creation.

SANEF celebrates the legacy and contribution of Veteran Journalist Estelle Ellis

The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) celebrates the legacy and contribution of veteran reporter Estelle Ellis to South African journalism

The veteran journalist Ellis, Daily Maverick’s Eastern Cape correspondent, died on Wednesday evening at the age of 51.

She was one of South Africa’s most respected journalists and a fearless champion of public-interest journalism. Throughout her distinguished career, she dedicated herself to telling the stories of ordinary South Africans, particularly those whose voices were often overlooked or ignored.

Born in Sasolburg in 1974, Ellis joined Daily Maverick in 2019 after an accomplished career in journalism, including her years at The Herald in Gqeberha. She quickly became a central figure in Daily Maverick’s Eastern Cape reporting, earning the respect of colleagues, sources, and communities alike through her relentless pursuit of truth and accountability.

A Night of Courage, Conversation and Change

Last night in Parktown, the South African National Editors' Forum proudly celebrated the launch of the Glass Ceilings 2026: Women in the South African Media, edited by Glenda Daniels, Wits Professor of media studies and SANEF Secretary General.

While women at the launch called out patriarchal attitudes and sexism in the media, it also celebrated strong women leadership in media.

The launch was a powerful gathering of journalists, editors, media leaders, academics and advocates who came together to reflect on two decades of research into gender equality in South Africa’s media.

The book shines a light on the progress made, the barriers that remain, and the growing challenge of online misogyny confronting women journalists. It was an evening of honest conversations, powerful voices and renewed commitment to creating a media industry where women can thrive, lead and speak out — loudly.

The glass ceiling may be visible, but so too is the determination to break through it.

SANEF launches Glass Ceilings 2026: Women in the South African media

A landmark new study launched by SANEF found from a research survey that 75% of South African women journalists experience online bullying and misogyny, warning that the industry’s long standing “glass ceiling” has evolved into a deeply entrenched cyber ceiling.

The launch of Glass Ceilings 2026 takes place on 6 August 2026 at Emoyeni, Johannesburg. As SANEF celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, this project is a call to action for more diversity in media.

The Glass Ceilings 2026: women in South African media is edited by Glenda Daniels, professor of Media Studies, Wits University, also Sanef’s SG.

The book contains 10 chapters, through a powerful cacophony of voices from civil society, editors, activists, lawyers and academics: Katy Katopodis, Phathiswa Magopeni, Ferial Haffajee, Paula Fray, Lizette Rabe, Patricia Handley, Makhosazana Zwane-Siguqa, Kirsten Pearson, Dinesh Balliah, Bongekile Macupe, Sophie Smit, Tina Power, Judy Sandison, Kate Skinner, and Kathy Magrobi, who are all driving change.

Celebrating Language, Identity and Media: 4th Indigenous Languages Seminar Announced

As artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and changing media consumption habits reshape how societies communicate, an important question confronts South Africa: How do we ensure that indigenous languages remain visible, relevant, and influential in the digital age?

It is against this backdrop that the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF), in partnership with the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB), the University of Fort Hare, and the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), will host the 4th Indigenous Languages and the Media Seminar on Thursday, 13 August 2026, at the University of Fort Hare's East London (kuGompo) Campus in the Eastern Cape.

Held under the theme, "Rooted in Language: Indigenous Media as a Platform for Belonging and Cultural Continuity," the seminar will bring together journalists, editors, academics, language practitioners, policymakers, students, community media representatives, and government stakeholders to explore the future of indigenous languages in South Africa's rapidly evolving media environment.
