Youth Day Commemoration - Aluta Continua towards a Just Energy Transition

On June 16, 1976, South African youth stood against injustice and changed the course of our history.

They refused to accept a future decided for them and reminded the us that young people are not merely inheritors of tomorrow, we are the architects and decision-makers of today!

Fifty years later, the fight for justice continues, as South Africa navigates a Just Energy Transition (JET) that is people-centred and youth-driven!

Will the transition address the realities of inequality, unemployment, energy poverty, and environmental injustice, or will it leave behind the very communities it claims to serve?

Our Youth Workshop that we held leading up to the Santa Marta Conference 2026, was proof that young climate justice activists are proving that youth are not passive stakeholders. They are organizing, advocating, storytelling, and demanding accountability.

This Youth Day, let us honour the courage of 1976 by embracing the responsibility of 2026. What role will you play?

On Wednesday, 20th of May 2026, Machinda Marongwe, the Southern Africa Cluster Regional Director delivered a pivotal presentation titled, ‘Tackling Inequality through Parliament-CSO Advocacy for Socio-Economic Justice’. Mr Marongwe shifted the perspective on poverty, arguing that systemic imbalance is not an accidental reality, but a direct consequence of policy choices by governments of the 16 SADC states.

His session to the SADC parliamentarians explored how regional parliaments and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) can form collaborative advocacy alliances to actively dismantle these structural barriers. By leveraging legislative oversight and collective grassroots action, the discussion challenged leaders to reform the economic systems in the countries and the region at large so that vulnerable populations are not left behind.

Reflecting on the deeply entrenched, structural roots of economic disparity, Liveson Manguwo, Senior Programs Manager at Oxfam South Africa, shared:
“Inequality has many facets to it. It is historical, [to meaningfully address it] we need to look at the historical context of countries like South Africa—the legacy of Apartheid and colonialism which still live with us today.

This legacy of inequality is visible in the job and educational opportunities people receive today, as well as in healthcare services available for them. Across all of these areas, there is a stark disparity in terms of access, opportunity, income, and wealth along racial and educational classes.

Ultimately, to resolve inequality in the SADC region we need to collectively address the disparities that exist due to these historical disadvantages and imbalances, whether in access to land, education, employment and economic opportunities.”

Every second, fossil fuel corporations make $3000 in profit.

For many households around the world, that’s a full year of energy bills.

As prices rise, Big Oil keeps cashing in; turning a basic need into a luxury for too many. One second of profit for them. 12 months of budgeting for everyone else.

It’s not normal, and it’s not fair.

It’s time to to Pay for the energy transition we need for people & planet.

50 countries are meeting in Colombia to plan the shift away from fossil fuels.
The facts are clear, this crisis was not caused equally.

Those most responsible - rich countries, big oil, and wealthy pollutocrats - must act first and fastest.
They must pay for a just energy transition.
