Butterfly Art Project The Butterfly Art Project is an organization based in Cape Town, South Africa. Art and the creative process yields endless healing possibilities.

Butterfly Art Project is a non profit organisation that empowers participants to become community of active facilitators, who use their skills in vulnerable communities, to bring about healing, healthy social lives and inspire others through art. The different programs reach out to hundreds of children and their carers living in the townships of the Cape. We are a group of local and international

art therapists, facilitators and involved persons who wish to make a difference, whilst promoting transcultural sharing, caring and understanding. While teaching children various art skills (water colour, crayons, clay) they start to develop abilities needed to cope with a modern society later in life and presently to deal with their daily challenges. Underprivileged children, like those living in townships, are barely exposed to specific material in order to experience normal, creative, childhood development. By offering them paper, brushes, cloth, spray bottles, puppets, rhythm and movement, we enable them to achieve a suitable development maturity for their age group. It is impossible for traumatized children to learn, grow or fulfil their potential without necessary intervention, like the Butterfly Art Project, to assist them in doing so. The simple concept of a butterfly’s metamorphosis, helps lead the children to a deeper understanding of change, growth, healing, transformation and the potential for such, in themselves and in their surroundings.

We are delighted to introduce Maria Sikaundi as the new Executive Director of the Butterfly Art Project 🦋

Maria joins BAP at an exciting time as we continue our mission of supporting healing, especially for children, through the power of art.

In her new role, Maria will work alongside our team, partners, facilitators and supporters to strengthen BAP’s impact and continue creating spaces where children and communities can build resilience, stability and creativity.

Our gorgeous Love Bugs enjoying “The Parachute Game” in the sunshine.
The aim of the game is to get a ball through the hole in the middle as many times as possible. This is a wonderful activity to build their hand-eye coordination and team work. ☀️

Our Counteracting Trauma Using BAP Method Module provided CAFs with the competencies they need to work more effectively with children from challenged households. The new learned skills and techniques will help CAFs bring calmness, creativity and safety to children from under-resourced communities.

Our cohort of newly trained Community Art Facilitators completed their module with a networking and alumni excursion Zeitz MOCAA , where they got to meet the wider CAF movement.

From a creative workshop to meaningful networking and an insightful guided tour – the experience was rich with connection, learning, and inspiration.
