In the lead-up to World Oceans Day (8 June), 48 Junior River Wardens from Red River, Floreat and Ysterplaat Primary Schools participated in an exciting day of marine conservation and environmental education at Lagoon Beach.

Hosted by the City of Cape Town's Biodiversity Management Branch and Nature Connect, in partnership with Shark Spotters and the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation , learners explored the important role sharks play in healthy ocean ecosystems, learned about ocean safety, and took part in a beach clean-up and litter audit.

Equipped with their Junior River Warden T-shirts, hats and gloves, the young conservationists collected 112.16kg of litter along the 500m coastline while learning about the impact of pollution on marine life and the actions we can all take to protect our oceans.

The event helped keep Lagoon Beach clean, and also inspired the next generation of environmental stewards to become champions for healthy rivers, wetlands and oceans.

Cornflower Primary School In-School Lesson

Our education team had an awesome time visiting the 5 Grade 3 classes at Cornflower Primary 🌱♻️

We shared a fun and interactive waste assembly, teaching learners how to reduce, reuse, and recycle in their everyday lives. Ending the lesson on a high note with the Recycle Song 🎶💚

So inspiring to see young eco‑champions who are eager to learn more about the importance of recycling 🌍✨

Small creatures. Big impact. 🐝🌼

In celebration of World Bee Day, our Conservation Leaders spent the day at Babylonstoren exploring the fascinating world of bees and pollinators through interactive learning, observation, and teamwork. Learners became “Pollinator Detectives” as they completed a scavenger hunt filled with riddles, clues, and hands-on activities focused on bee biology, pollination, honey production, biodiversity, and conservation.

From spotting pollinators in the gardens to uncovering the secrets of hive communication and learning about the threats facing bee populations, the day was both educational and exciting. Through collaboration, critical thinking, and outdoor exploration, learners gained a deeper appreciation for the essential role bees play in ecosystems and food production — proving that even the smallest creatures can have the biggest impact on our planet. 🌍💛

After recent rains you’re more likely to see these guys above ground, often because their tunnels get flooded or disrupted.
The Cape dune mole-rat gets labelled a pest and quickly removed from gardens. But their presence usually points to something else.

Soil that is active, alive, and functioning. Beneath the surface there is constant movement, aeration, and nutrient cycling happening.
What looks like damage on top is tied to processes that keep the soil system working.

They can mess up a lawn visually, but underground they are doing the work of natural soil engineers.

Maybe the shift is simple. Before reacting, understand what’s actually happening below your feet.

Climate Action Starts Beneath Our Feet

Last week’s storms were a reminder that climate change is something we are already experiencing in our everyday lives. From heavy rains to flooding and erosion, the effects on our landscapes and communities are becoming more visible each year.

That is why our recent Youth in Nature short courses on climate change and erosion management were so relevant and important. During the training in Calvinia, learners explored how healthy ecosystems help protect our environment and communities during extreme weather events.

Healthy soil plays a much bigger role than many people realise. It helps absorb water, reduces erosion, stores carbon, and supports biodiversity. In fact, scientists estimate that around 60% of species spend part of their lives in the soil ecosystem, a hidden world beneath our feet that keeps nature healthy and resilient.

As part of the practical training, learners gained hands-on experience in assessing erosion sites, understanding water movement across landscapes, and building gabions to help stabilise vulnerable areas.

By equipping young people with environmental knowledge and practical conservation skills, we are helping build stronger, more climate-resilient communities for the future.

Our planet’s ecosystems rely on countless interconnected species, each playing a role in maintaining balance and resilience. Today, many of these species face growing threats, placing entire ecosystems at risk and affecting the stability of the natural world in ways that ripple far beyond what we can always see.

This Endangered Species Day, we speak to our team on the ground at the Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area , a critically important urban nature reserve that protects rare Cape Flats Sand Fynbos and provides habitat for several endangered species. Through shared awareness, collective effort, and community action, we can help safeguard the ecosystems we all depend on and support the life they sustain for generations to come.
