How SA and Global Media Cover Immigration

South African and international media report on the same immigration-related unrest, but frame it differently.

Local media focuses on governance, policing, and economic pressure, while international outlets emphasise humanitarian impact, fear among migrants, and xenophobic violence.

The result is two distinct narratives built around the same events.

Questions Raised Over Mayor’s Remarks in Viral Video

The full context surrounding this exchange is not yet clear, and for that reason we are sharing this video with caution.

Many viewers have asked what prompted the mayor to make these remarks and whether they were made inadvertently or in the stress of the moment. Others have questioned whether comments of this nature, regardless of the intention, risk deepening existing divisions.

The video also raises a broader question that many South Africans are debating: If someone has lived their entire life in South Africa and is a South African citizen, are they regarded as African?

Sherwood Hall under control

Thousands of Malawian nationals staged protests at Sherwood Hall in Durban on June 16 and 17 after seeking refuge there following anti-immigrant threats.

The demonstrations escalated into clashes when Home Affairs officials attempted to process and verify the migrants’ documentation.

Police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd after some protesters blocked nearby roads.

Malawian authorities said the violence resulted from a misunderstanding, with many migrants believing they were being taken to a permanent detention facility instead of being repatriated.

Law enforcement has since brought the unrest under control.

Provincial and local authorities have described the situation as a major humanitarian crisis.

Authorities are now working to fast-track formal deportations rather than relying solely on voluntary returns.

Tensions escalated at Sherwood Hall in Durban as thousands of Malawian nationals awaiting repatriation confronted anti-illegal immigration activist Ngizwe Mchunu and members of March and March.

With the number of displaced migrants swelling to around 6,000, fears are mounting that growing anti-immigrant sentiment and the planned 30 June shutdown could spark further xenophobic violence.

Authorities have deployed a task team and remain on high alert, warning that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, attacks on foreign nationals and lawlessness will not be tolerated.
