The Makhanda community came in high numbers, to witness the A4A Civic Action ExpO at the Nompumelelo Enrichment Centre on Wednesday. CivActs, supported by A4A and PSAM staff, exhibited information on the A4A, its objectives and highlights, civic education, advocacy and media advocacy, research and data collection, rights-based approaches, public participation, government documents and more. On display were info graphs, pictures, fliers, posters, the Accountability Toolkit, while A4A audio/visual outputs such as the documentary, the People’s Hour recordings and Makhanda A4A CivActs visuals were being played. In conclusion, the team held a Public Meeting where CivActs members shared their key experiences on civic action in relation to capacity and exposure from the A4A project in Makhanda. The event was intented to empower the CivActs, who are initially community members, with the responsibility of transferring knowledge and strategies on effective civic action to fellow citizens. It is safe to say the team did a great job at that. Well done team Makhanda and a BIG thanks to all the local stakeholders and community members who helped us to put this together.

The Makana Local Municipality recently held its Mayoral Imbizo IDP Review Meetings and Makhanda A4A CivActs members were there, making some crucial submissions and inputs, while sharing information and raising public awareness.

Phila Nombombo raised concerns around the lack of updates, with timeframes, from the municipality about the upgrading of bulk sewage infrastructure, which can potentially add value to the local economy and allow for housing and other developments. After raising the need for adequate planning in the current roadworks, he queried about the crucial need for the municipality to put By-Laws into effect, to assist communities to regulate illegal dumping. He concluded with the need to prioritize the development of informal areas, where basic provisions such as water and sanitation are priority needs, mentioning Phaphamani and Zolani Informal Settlements (ward 3), which are more than three decades old.

One of the key inputs made by Lubabalo Soxujwa was the need to educate or workshop the community about governance participatory processes such as the IDP to ensure effective participation. He also emphasized on the need for the municipality to prioritize paving the roads, as the roadworks continue, as he asked for the municipality’s provisions in the IDP for disabled residents. He concluded by asking for feedback on the Special Investigating Unit’s (SIU) investigation into irregularities in the municipality, including the Auditor General’s negative findings.

The Makhanda A4A CivActs team continues to engage with the Makhanda community, Makana municipality and other stakeholders in efforts of promoting good governance through social accountability.

Progress Update: Reed Removal Along Klip River Underway! 🌿

The A4A team is pleased to report that efforts have begun along the Klip River. JoburgParks and ’s procurement of Dam-it is helping clear reeds at the Abu Asvat Drive bridge, a key step toward unblocking culverts for natural water flow.

This process requires a coordinated effort from various departments to maintain the wetlands and remove mining silt. A4A will continue monitoring progress to ensure a lasting positive impact for the community.
