*Overstrand Municipality opens 100 EPWP job opportunities across the area*

The Overstrand Municipality has uploaded a range of job opportunities under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), funded through the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).

A total of 100 positions are available across the Overstrand, providing short-term employment opportunities for local residents.

Vacancies are available in Gansbaai and Stanford, Hawston, Hermanus, Kleinmond and Pearly Beach. The positions include General Workers, Artisan Assistants, Artisan Plumbers, Library Assistants and an Administrator post.

*The available positions are:*
• General Workers (70 posts): Gansbaai & Stanford, Hawston, Hermanus and Kleinmond
• Artisan Assistants (6 posts): Hermanus
• Artisan Plumbers (14 posts): Hermanus, Hawston, Kleinmond, Gansbaai & Stanford, and Pearly Beach
• Library Assistants (8 posts): Hermanus, Kleinmond, Gansbaai & Stanford, and Pearly Beach
• Administrators (2 posts): Hermanus

The contracts will run until 31 March 2027, offering successful applicants valuable work experience and an opportunity to contribute to service delivery and community development initiatives within the Overstrand area.

[SAPS URGES COMMUNITIES TO PRIORITISE WATER SAFETY AS SUMMER SEASON APPROACHES]

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has noted with concern several reported drowning incidents that have resulted in fatalities.

As the summer season approaches, more people are expected to engage in water-related recreational activities. The SAPS therefore urges all community members to exercise extreme caution around swimming pools, rivers, dams and other bodies of water to prevent tragic drowning incidents.

The SAPS appeals to parents, guardians and community members to adhere to the following drowning prevention and water safety guidelines:

DROWNING PREVENTION AND WATER SAFETY TIPS

Supervise children at all times: Never leave children unattended near swimming pools, rivers, dams or any other body of water.

Keep children within arm’s reach: Young children must always remain within arm’s reach of a responsible adult when in or around water.

Never allow children to swim alone: Children should only swim under the close supervision of a responsible adult.

Teach children about water safety: Educate children about the dangers associated with water and encourage them to learn how to swim through a qualified swimming instructor.

Swim in designated areas: Where possible, only swim in designated and safe swimming areas.

Avoid alcohol and drugs: Never swim or operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as these substances impair judgement and coordination, increasing the risk of drowning.

Avoid diving into unfamiliar water: Never dive into shallow or unfamiliar water without first establishing its depth, as this could result in serious injuries.

Exercise caution around rivers and dams: These water bodies may have strong currents, hidden deep holes and slippery banks that pose serious dangers.

Practise boating safety: Never overload a boat. Always wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating or fishing from a boat.

Know how to respond to emergencies: Learn basic water rescue techniques and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Never put your own life at risk when attempting to rescue someone who is drowning. Call emergency services immediately for assistance.

The SAPS appeals to parents, guardians and all community members to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others when participating in water-related activities.

Community members are reminded that drowning can happen within seconds. Constant supervision, responsible behaviour and adherence to water safety precautions can save lives and prevent unnecessary tragedies.

The SAPS wishes all residents a safe and responsible summer season.
