Growing People, Growing Communities, Growing Food! 🌱

Our Regenerative Farming Training session in Clarkson was a great success! We had 29 enthusiastic participants from Clarkson Primary School, Syble’s project and Bonju joining us for a day of learning, sharing and getting our hands into the soil.

The training started with the ABCD mindset – “Use what you have!” This was especially meaningful in the Tsitsikamma area, where we discovered so many valuable community assets and agricultural opportunities already present. Sometimes the greatest resource is simply looking at what is already around you with fresh eyes.

Participants were introduced to regenerative farming through both theory and practical learning, including:
- Foundations for Farming principles
- Farming for profitability
- Composting
- Understanding and improving soil
- Garden planning and layout

And then there’s the setting… this place is beautiful!

A big thank you to everyone who participated and shared their knowledge, energy and enthusiasm. We’re excited to see how these ideas take root and grow in the Tsitsikamma community!

Stepping into my new role as SEF Assistant at SSK SEF has already been an unforgettable experience.

One of the highlights of our visit to Cookhouse was watching Irma Februarie registering one of our participants for his SARS number to be onboarded on our SEF program. What made the moment even more special was discovering that we were standing at the very crèche where he had volunteered and, with his own hands, created a beautiful vegetable garden complete with fencing. Seeing what can be achieved with commitment, initiative and care was truly inspiring.

As someone new to the SEF family, this trip opened my eyes. I was deeply encouraged by the way the Cookhouse community embraces its strengths, using the assets they already have to build a brighter future for themselves. It is a beautiful community filled with resilient, hardworking and welcoming people, and I sincerely hope to visit again soon.

To every participant, administrator, supervisor, team leader and the dedicated admin staff of SSK SEF in Humansdorp, thank you for the warm welcome. I am excited to work alongside you and to see what the future holds for our Cookhouse team.

A special thank you to: Irma Februarie for introducing me to the Cookhouse team and making me feel part of the family from day one, Michelle for safely driving us around and making the journey so enjoyable, Lunga for the delicious fresh vegetables and for sharing your knowledge on establishing, harvesting and sustaining productive community gardens, Willie and Madeleine for making all the arrangements and giving me the opportunity to experience this incredible community, Aloma House for your outstanding hospitality. The accommodation was beautiful, the food was exceptional, and your kindness and organisation made our stay truly memorable.
Our ABCD facilitator, Bernie from previously Ikhala Trust was simply phenomenal. Your passion, knowledge and ability to inspire others made a lasting impression.
Thank you also to Eric, Jeanine and Celeste for your warm welcome and genuine kindness. You made me feel right at home.

I leave Cookhouse with a grateful heart, inspired by the people I met and excited for the journey ahead. Here's to growing communities, creating opportunities and making a lasting difference, together.
