A growing movement of cross-functional teams running ambitious 100-day sprints across South Africa's institutions, turning the tide on gender-based violence and femicide; one local breakthrough at a time.

In Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality, schools and public services ran a single coordinated programme this 100-Day Challenge, teaching learners and community members how to recognise abuse, understand consent, and know where to turn for help.

Where the numbers came from:
📣 1,400 learners through Child Protection Week
⚽ 1,900 learners through Sport Against Crime at two high schools
🎓 1,000 learners across 11 high schools at a career exhibition

Municipal teams, education officials, SAPS, social development, health professionals, Legal Aid and community organisations worked from the same plan, with designated GBVF contacts at schools and departments so learners have someone to approach.

The team is already planning its next 100 days, with a focus on reaching more people and strengthening survivor referrals.

College life continues through classes and examinations, even when a student is dealing with violence. At Gert Sibande Skills Academy in Standerton, the 100-Day team worked to make GBVF information and support easier to access within these demands.

Peer-led discussions in residences and an after-hours WhatsApp support line gave students more ways to seek assistance. Sessions moved to lunch breaks and evenings during examinations, while stakeholders met weekly to follow up on cases and referrals.

The renewed public discussion about municipal services and GBVF prevention reflects issues that communities have been raising for some time. These issues have also informed Sol Plaatje Municipality’s 100-Day Challenge.

The team is helping survivors report violence and follow up on unresolved cases, while the municipality has begun installing toilets and cleaning neglected spaces where residents have described risks to women and children.

Organisations that previously worked separately are now working together. When survivors raise unresolved cases, the team refers them to justice partners for follow-up.

On 29 September, following the killings of women in Ekurhuleni, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on gender-based violence and femicide. He announced 60 and 90-day directives to recover stalled cases, clear forensic backlogs and make public spaces safer for women.

Since 2021, local teams across the country have been testing one way of working towards exactly these kinds of goals. Courts have cleared domestic violence backlogs. Police stations have unblocked DNA evidence. Municipalities have made hotspots safer.

The 100-Day Challenge approach is not the whole answer. It is a method that has shown real promise, and it offers hope that urgent, coordinated local action is possible.

The Ending GBVF 100-Day Challenge teams have written an open letter to the President, offering their experience as one contribution to the national response.

When the President announced his four-point plan, with 60 and 90-day deadlines on case recovery and forensic backlogs, courts across the country had to work out how to respond.

A cluster of courts in the Free State found themselves already prepared to respond.

Having run Ending GBVF 100-Day Challenges in 2025, the work the directives now ask for was already routine. Backlog cases are screened. Matters with outstanding DNA results are tracked. Forensic requests fast-tracked through senior prosecutors, with cases involving children prioritised. The working relationship between the NPA and SAPS that makes all of this possible was built inside those Challenges.

Advocate Joyce Mokoena, Senior Public Prosecutor and Chief Prosecutor in the Free State, puts it simply: "It is all thanks to the 100-Day Challenge, because if it wasn't for this, we wouldn't be sitting where we are today."

A national directive is far easier to meet when you are already recording the data.

Join the TVET teams as they share how they used their 100-Day Challenges to make campuses safer, more supportive and more responsive for students and survivors.

This online session will take place via Zoom.

South Africa’s GBVF crisis is also playing out in schools and among young people. Learner pregnancies, sexual violence and harassment raise serious questions about whether incidents of suspected abuse and sexual violence are being identified, formally reported and followed up, and whether learners are receiving the support they need.

In Mafikeng, the 100-Day Challenge team is looking closely at what happens at these points. Over 100 days, educators are being trained on mandatory reporting, schools are strengthening sexual harassment policies and survivor referrals are being tracked. Learners are also participating in prevention programmes across five sub-districts.

On 24 November 2026, the justice sector will be having their National Close-out webinar to share their stories and lessons from their 2026 Ending GBVF 100-Day Challenges.

Come listen to the teams from courts and SAPS on how they used the 100-Day Challenges to make the justice sector more accessible, friendly and efficient for victims, survivors and witnesses.

This will be an online session via Zoom.

Last year, the Gert Sibande TVET College team’s 100-Day Challenge saw 55 GBVF cases reported, some of which proceeded to court. That experience raised an important question for this year’s work - once someone reports abuse, are the people around them equipped to respond?

The team is now working with teachers, SGBs and community partners to strengthen understanding of reporting and referral processes. Community members have also joined court proceedings and GBVF awareness activities, while male and family dialogues are planned as the work continues.

Swartland is using their 100-Day Challenge to focus existing community programmes around measurable goals for child protection, mental health, substance abuse prevention and GBVF support.

Since 18 August, partners have been working across schools and communities, while strengthening referrals and access to services through the Dahlia Centre.

By 26 November, the team aims to reach at least 500 children, parents and caregivers through child protection work, 500 young people through substance abuse prevention and 300 people through mental health education. The work also includes activating 13 GBVF Ambassadors and strengthening referrals and support through the Dahlia Centre.
