40% fewer backlog cases in 100 days. That is the goal the Lephalale Regional Court team has set.

Backlogs keep survivors waiting years for justice. This team of magistrates, prosecutors, court staff and SAPS officers is working to change that, delivering legal closure faster for the people who have been waiting longest in the system.
100 days. One ambitious goal. Local action that gets results.

This Youth Day, young people are helping lead the response to GBVF.

More than 360 End GBVF 100-Day Challenges have run since 2021, and youth sit at the centre of many of them. At Northlink College, students are reporting more safely across seven campuses. Boland TVET reached 1,400 first-years with real support and services. Stellenbosch seated its first Junior Town Council. In Limpopo, learners watched justice unfold in moot courts.

Three cycles are underway right now, with two more launching in July.

When young people help design the response, change reaches the spaces and the peers that adults often cannot.

Imagine a family where a divorce matter has been waiting on the court roll for an extended period. Parents may be trying to make decisions about finances, living arrangements and the future of their children while still waiting for the legal process to be concluded. For children the uncertainty can be particularly difficult, as important aspects of family life remain unresolved.

Divorce is rarely experienced by only two individuals. Its effects are often felt across entire families and can influence people's sense of stability and how they plan their future. The longer matters remain outstanding, the longer that families have to navigate uncertainty while waiting for an outcome.

As part of the 100-Day Challenge, the Thabazimbi Regional Court team is committing to reducing all 97 backlog divorce cases within 100 days. The goal is to ensure that matters move through the court system more efficiently so that families are able to receive outcomes and begin making informed decisions about the next stage of their lives.

We want to recognise these efforts, learn from them and better understand how the 100-Day Challenge approach is being adapted across different communities and sectors.

If your team is running an independent or “organic” 100-Day Challenge, we encourage you to register your project here:

Seshego Regional Court has committed to reducing the backlog of Sexual Offence cases older than two years by 25% within 100 days.

This work is important in efforts to end GBVF because delays in the justice system affect survivors’ wellbeing and trust in institutions. Keep an eye on this team as they move through the challenge and continue working towards a more responsive and survivor-centred justice process.
