More victims and survivors are coming forward to report GBVF and seek assistance in Greater Tzaneen.

Through the Letaba TVET College 100-Day Challenge, more than 3,000 young people have received information on GBVF prevention, how to report and where to find support. More than 200 GBVF cases have been reported during the campaign period.

The team is seeing greater confidence among victims and survivors to speak about their experiences, report cases and seek assistance. This shows progress towards the Challenge goal of Breaking the Silence.

At Lephalale Regional Court, the 100-Day Challenge has required the team to look beyond the number of cases on the roll and understand what was preventing matters from being finalised.

The team found that delays could arise at different points in the court process, including outstanding investigations, unavailable witnesses and difficulties securing evidence. By bringing the different role players involved in a case into the same process, the team has been able to follow up on outstanding matters and keep attention on cases that could otherwise remain unresolved for long periods.

Their experience shows that reducing a court backlog depends on what happens inside the courtroom as well as coordination across the wider justice process.

Majuba TVET College’s Dundee Technology Centre, in partnership with Higher Health, recently hosted a Men’s Dialogue focused on issues affecting male students both on campus and beyond.

The dialogue was facilitated by male students and it covered four key areas: 1) entrepreneurship and economic independence, 2) active citizenship, 3) the role of men in preventing GBVF and 4) men’s physical and mental health.

Representatives from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, the IEC, the Department of Social Development and the campus clinic joined the conversation, sharing information on available support and encouraging young men to take greater responsibility for their health, relationships, communities and futures.

The dialogue created space for male students to engage openly with these issues and consider the role they can play in contributing to healthier relationships and communities.

Since 2021, teams across South Africa have run more than four hundred 100-Day Challenges. In 2027, that door opens to more sectors.

A 100-Day Challenge is a 100-day sprint. A frontline team sets one unreasonable goal, moves fast, and works to shift a real problem where it is felt most, whether that is a survivor waiting on a protection order, a campus that needs to be safer, or a service that keeps breaking down.

Any organisation or department with a team close enough to the problem to move it can take part. Courts, municipalities, colleges, universities, government departments, NGOs, private companies and community partners are all invited, in GBVF and beyond.

Organisations resource their own team's participation, including coach and strategist training, so the methodology stays with you long after the 100 days.

Teams join the 2027 cohort and run their sprint alongside others in the same window. They learn together, get weekly coaching, and share what works.

Drakenstein Municipality has begun multiple 100-Day Challenges, each focusing on a different part of the local response to GBVF.

Over the next 100 days, teams will work towards increasing formal GBVF reporting in schools, connecting more survivors to support services, reducing safety concerns in identified hotspot areas, creating skills and economic opportunities for survivors and vulnerable women and improving coordination between organisations involved in referrals.

Together, these goals recognise that responding to GBVF requires action across prevention, reporting, survivor support, economic participation and the systems that connect people to services.

Leaving an abusive situation can create immediate needs that go beyond reporting the abuse. A survivor may need somewhere to stay, access to food and psychosocial support while trying to rebuild stability and make decisions about what comes next.

This is why the City of Johannesburg’s 100-Day Challenge aims to provide 100 GBVF survivors referred through the Skills Development Unit with integrated support services, including emergency shelter, food assistance and psychosocial support.

Access to these services can reduce some of the pressures that often leave survivors dependent on abusive partners or that make them feel trapped in such circumstances.

By bringing these forms of support together, the 100-Day Challenge aims to help survivors move beyond referral towards independence and access to the assistance they need to rebuild their lives.

70 years ago today, 20 000 women walked to the Union Buildings carrying more than 100 000 signatures.

Between January and March 2026, SAPS recorded 9 782 rapes. More than 100 a day. Two out of three happened in a home.

South Africa has a plan. However, the National Strategic Plan on GBVF is not a protection order. Incidents go unreported. Backlogs sit in specific courts. Waiting times sit in specific clinics. This is where we have to move the needle.

A 100-Day Challenge starts there. A local team, taking one NSP pillar at a time and committing to a 100 day sprint to achieve survivor impact. Cases finalised. Orders issued faster. Survivors met with someone trained and ready. Women linked to economic opportunity.

South Africa does not need a new strategy, we need localisation so that survivors can feel the intentions of the NSP-GBVF.
