Little Mouths, Big Milestones

No. 1: Gagging is NOT choking!

With our little Nestlings starting their journey into the wonderful world of solids, we thought we would share some of what we are learning along the way.

Introducing solids is exciting, messy and sometimes a little nerve-racking. One moment there are happy little faces discovering new tastes, and the next, watery eyes, dramatic expressions and a rather alarming gag!

What many people do not realise is that gagging is a normal, protective reflex. It helps babies learn to manage different textures and move food safely around their mouths.

Knowing the difference matters. Gagging is usually noisy, with coughing, retching and food being pushed forward. Choking can be silent, with a baby unable to breathe, cry or cough effectively, and requires immediate first aid.

When a baby gags, stay close, remain calm and allow them a moment to work through it. Never blindly put your fingers in their mouth, as this can make things worse.

At The Nest, every new taste, funny face and messy little mouth is another milestone worth celebrating.

Little mouths, big milestones and so much to discover!

There are two people in this photograph, yet there are others whose absence is just as significant. Somewhere, there is a mother whose arms are empty while ours are full.

At The Nest, we often share the small victories that mean so much. The grams gained, the first smiles, the developmental milestones and the extraordinary resilience of little bodies that have already endured more than they should.

What we speak about less often are the mothers. Some are still children themselves, growing up in circumstances that offer little opportunity or support. Others have experienced the same instability, neglect or deprivation from which their own children now need protection. For many, poverty is not a temporary hardship, but a reality that has shaped generations of their families.

When we see a baby who is warm, fed, safe and loved, it is tempting to believe that something has been fixed. In many ways, something profoundly important has changed, although the circumstances that brought that baby into care often remain exactly as they were.

We can provide a safe home, nurture fragile little bodies, encourage development and offer the love and consistency every child deserves. What we cannot do within these walls is undo generations of poverty, interrupted education, childhood trauma and inadequate social support.

Perhaps one of the most difficult realisations in this work is that we are often caring for the youngest person affected by a problem that began long before they were born. There are circumstances in which removing a child from their family is absolutely necessary. A child’s safety must always come first. Yet protecting children and supporting families should never be seen as competing priorities. Both are essential if we hope to break the cycles that bring so many vulnerable children into alternative care.

We desperately need safe places for babies, while also asking ourselves why so many babies need them in the first place, because if our compassion begins only when a baby is removed from her mother’s arms, perhaps we are arriving far too late.

There is something rather magical about the relationship between art and children. The colours, the shapes, the imagination, the joy. Art has a way of speaking to little minds long before they have the words to tell us what they see. Every single piece at The Nest has been thoughtfully chosen. Nothing is there by accident. We wanted to create a space filled with warmth, colour, beauty and happiness. A home that feels as nurturing as the arms that hold the babies who come through our doors.

This beautiful artwork by Solomon Omogboye felt as though it had been created especially for us. It captures the very essence of what The Nest stands for: A Soft Landing for the Tiniest Lives.

This photograph captures one of those little moments that make everything worthwhile. Our little Birdy, sitting quietly, completely captivated by the artwork in front of her. Those curious eyes studying the colours and shapes, taking it all in, discovering a little more of the world around her.

What makes this photograph even more special is that just two days later, Birdy sat independently for the very first time! For a baby who arrived with such a difficult start, every developmental milestone is an enormous victory. And this one was particularly special.

There is so much more to nurturing a baby than feeding, changing and keeping them safe. It is about creating a world that invites them to look, explore, wonder, discover and grow.

Sometimes, it all begins with a little girl staring at a beautiful piece of art.

Heritage Haven is officially open for bookings!

What if your next weekend away could do a little more than just leave you feeling rested?

Nestled in the heart of Greyton, Heritage Haven is one of the village’s oldest cottages, lovingly restored to preserve its beautiful history and charm. Stepping through its doors feels a little like stepping back in time, with carefully curated antiques, beautiful old treasures and all the comforts of modern living.

Two gorgeous bedrooms, a fireplace for those chilly Greyton evenings, a garden that is quite simply something out of a storybook, and a wood-fired hot tub for soaking beneath the stars. Cool in summer, gloriously cosy in winter, and the perfect place to slow down and simply be.

What makes Heritage Haven truly special is its purpose.Every cent of the proceeds from your stay goes towards The Nest Baby Haven.

From the beginning, we knew that creating a safe, loving home for vulnerable babies was only half the challenge. Making sure that home could continue providing care for years to come was just as important.
Heritage Haven forms part of The Haven Collection, one of the ways we are building long-term financial sustainability for The Nest. A way to generate ongoing income to help cover the everyday costs of caring for our little Nestlings, from round-the-clock nurturing to all the little things that make a house a home.

So your next getaway could be a rather beautiful way to make a difference.

Yesterday we took little Dot to visit her mother, and both Nicky and I struggled all afternoon to put into words what we witnessed, or even to identify the emotion it left behind.

There was the long drive with this tiny baby, making sure she was comfortable and safe. And then there was her mother. A young girl, still a child herself, whose face lit up with absolute joy when she saw her daughter. The love in her eyes was unmistakable.

And then she said something that we cannot stop thinking about: “Don’t worry, when I was a baby, I was also taken away. My siblings too.” A child comforting her own child with a story of separation that has somehow become normal in her world.

There is something profoundly heartbreaking about that. Generations of poverty, children having children, school years cut short, opportunities that never existed in the first place, and a system that intervenes when things fall apart but so often fails to prevent them from falling apart.

We are so quick to judge young mothers, to question their choices, their circumstances, their ability to care for their children, but how much choice is there really when you are born into a cycle that has already determined so much of your future?

Yesterday there was no judgement. Only an overwhelming sense of compassion, sadness and the realisation that something is terribly wrong, because the love was there. It was beautiful and undeniable. Unfortunately love alone cannot undo systemic poverty, generational trauma or the absence of opportunity.

And perhaps the hardest part of yesterday was recognising that there were two vulnerable children in that room. One tiny baby who needs protecting, and one young mother who, not so long ago, needed exactly the same.

We speak so often about breaking the cycle. Yesterday was a reminder of just how deep that cycle runs, and how much more we need to do to give children a genuinely different future.

It’s been almost a week since our “official” opening of The Nest Baby Haven, and what a beautiful reminder it was of just how much can happen when a village comes together.

The Nest was already a home long before the opening. There had been countless feeds, tiny milestones, first smiles, grams gained, and little lives beginning to flourish in the arms of people who absolutely adore them.

But last Friday was about celebrating the extraordinary community that has grown around these little lives. A garden filled with people who have given their time, their hands, their expertise, their resources and their hearts. People who painted walls, moved furniture, offered advice, made introductions, donated, encouraged and stepped forward whenever something needed doing.

Some have been involved from the very beginning. Others have only recently become part of the journey, but every contribution, big or small, has helped make The Nest what it is today.

Wishes were hung on our tree, flowers were planted, glasses were raised, and for one beautiful afternoon, the people who helped create this little haven were together in one place.

And then, as the last guests left, The Nest carried on doing what it does best. Bottles were made, nappies were changed, tiny arms reached out for cuddles, and the gentle rhythm of caring for babies continued because that is what this is really about.

Not a beautiful building, an opening ceremony or a milestone reached, but a home where some of the most vulnerable little people are surrounded by an extraordinary abundance of love.

There is something deeply moving about a community coming together for children they may never meet, whose stories they may never know, and whose futures they may never witness.

To every single person who has become part of this village, thank you. The Nest is a reflection of your generosity, your kindness and your belief that every baby deserves the gentlest possible beginning.

And so begins Birdy’s next big adventure… FOOD! 🥄🐣

Yesterday we introduced Birdy to her very first solids, and goodness, this little girl was READY! She grabbed hold of both my hands, as if to say, “Do not you dare stop feeding me!” and proceeded to polish off the entire tub! Not a spoonful left behind.

For a little girl who arrived at The Nest so tiny and malnourished, every new milestone feels especially significant. Watching her grow stronger, develop new skills and discover the world around her is such a joy. And today, that world got a whole lot tastier!

A huge thank you to Beely Baby , who have put together a wonderful weekly meal plan for our Nestlings, introducing a variety of nutritious foods, flavours and textures as they embark on their food journeys. Having thoughtfully prepared, age-appropriate meals makes this exciting new chapter so much easier for our team, and we are incredibly grateful for their support.

And please, can we take a moment to appreciate the tongue sticking out of the feeder and that look of deep concentration? Apparently eating is very serious business!

Sometimes the most powerful medicine is simply another human being. For premature babies, skin-to-skin contact is so much more than a cuddle. It helps regulate their temperature, heart rate and breathing, supports oxygen levels and blood sugar, reduces stress and crying, encourages deeper sleep, improves feeding and digestion, conserves precious energy for growth and supports their developing brain and nervous system.

It can help with weight gain, reduce pain, support immunity and, importantly, teaches a tiny body something it should still have been learning safely inside the womb: you are warm, you are held, you are safe.

For our little prem Nestlings, we make skin-to-skin part of their care whenever it is appropriate. A quiet chest, a steady heartbeat, warmth, familiar voices and loving arms doing some very important work.
