An unfamiliar number lit up my phone screen. The caller asked if this was Journey of Hope Baby Home, and I warmly replied, “Yes, it is. How can I help?”
They explained they were looking for a children’s home to support and donate to and asked a few questions about who we are and what we do. Eventually, the conversation turned to how many children we care for and their ages. I shared that we currently have six little ones with us, ranging from 8 months to 3 years old.
I immediately heard the tone of the caller change, but nothing prepared me for what came next.
“Oh… only six children? We’re looking for somewhere much bigger. Sorry.”
And just like that, the call ended.
Sadly, this is not the first time something like this has happened. As a small organisation, we face this often. Many people want to know their donation will reach as many children as possible, and somehow “only six babies” can make our work seem less important.
But to us, those six little lives are everything.
Each child has their own story, their own trauma, and their own need for safety, love, and belonging. They are not numbers. They are tiny humans who deserve to be protected, nurtured, and deeply cared for.
The reality is that smaller organisations like ours often need support the most. We don’t have fundraising departments, large marketing budgets, or teams running our social media. Most days, it’s simply me trying to juggle countless roles while raising six vulnerable little humans who deserve every opportunity to heal and thrive.
At Journey of Hope, we believe children belong in loving family environments, not institutions. Our home may be small, but the care each child receives is deeply personal.
So next time you or your company have CSI funds and are looking for a worthy cause to support, please don’t overlook the smaller organisations. Because while it may seem like “only six children,” to those six children, the difference you make is priceless and the gratitude we feel is truly unmatched.
