and we celebrate the full circle of - from sowing a good seed into fertile ground, providing the right conditions for growth and then watching the plant grow tall and strong, creating the right conditions for even MORE plants to grow. (Watch our gardens GROW after all this rain! ๐ŸŒง)
This is Milton, a young man dedicated to learning, who faced a bump in his childhood which brought him into Kids Haven at the end of his high school career. Completing Matric, Milton successfully secured his Diploma in Business Information Technology from UJ. Last year, he joined the Kids Haven staff team as our Digital Trainer.
Milton continues to grow and upskill himself. At the same time he runs digital-learning classes for every child at Kids Haven, and every young person in the , and any staff who asks. He has added robotics to his wheelhouse and runs robotics classes for children living at Kids Haven. Behind the scenes, he is taking photos, maintaining our highlights digital display in reception AND went ahead and built a tracking database to easily monitor the growth in young people who complete the pathway program and go on to learn and earn.
๐Ÿ’™ Milton has inspired our four young people who are now attending the Maharishi Institute.
๐Ÿ’›Most recently, he nurtured a young woman to code her first app,
๐Ÿ’™AND we now have another 4 young people from the previous Pathway groups who are coming for extra lessons on Fridays working on online certificates.
๐Ÿ’›Our junior animator is also under Milton's care and receiving help to get time online and learn, learn, learn!
Thank you Milton for building on your own love of learning and transferring these skills to grow something even bigger. YOU are delivering every day ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Today we celebrate in confidence in the children - creating opportunities for children to find their voice, try new things, be exposed to a bigger world and step up with agency and confidence to succeed.
Kids Haven believes wholeheartedly in the power of and using the Circle of Courage as our guiding framework:
๐Ÿ’›Belonging: The feeling of being loved, accepted, and safe within a community.
๐Ÿ’™Mastery: The drive to learn, succeed, and gain competence.
๐Ÿ’›Independence: The power to make decisions, solve problems, and show responsibility.
๐Ÿ’™Generosity: The purpose found in caring for and helping others

"We can do it"
"We can try, fail, and try again."
"We can work out what we want and how to get there"

At we know that growth needs the right conditions and for us, that starts with
We welcome a young child whose mum is not keeping him safe. He is not attending school and he is not getting enough to eat. The most scary thing of all is that no one is waiting for him at home, no one is looking for him, no one is asking where he goes. We are changing that.
The right conditions for growth at Kids Haven include a safe home to sleep in with mums and uncles who are in charge, calling you to meals, checking you get off to school, and playing with you or checking in on the games you play with the other children. Growth starts with safety. He is safe here ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™

Closing Womenโ€™s Month by Celebrating Shiluva - community social worker. We especially want to celebrate an inspirational woman whose work reminds us that care can change the direction of a life.

Shiluva is the social worker at Kids Haven who leads our Teenage Pregnancy Support and Empowerment Programme in Daveyton. She currently works alongside 23 girls and young mothers, aged 14โ€“20, helping them navigate pregnancy, motherhood, school, relationships and the enormous responsibility of caring for a baby while they are still growing up themselves.
Shiluvaโ€™s work is about much more than running a support group.

She creates a space where young mothers can speak without judgement, build confidence and learn about mental health, healthy relationships, family planning, gender-based violence, self-esteem and their rights. She encourages them to stay connected to education and to keep imagining a future for themselves beyond the challenges they face today.

And she sees the baby too.

When a young mother does not have nappies, baby clothes, food or toiletries, these are not small problems. Shiluva helps connect families to practical support, undertakes home visits, assists young mothers to access birth certificates and child support grants, and makes sure that support extends beyond the walls of a group session.

We think that this is what an inspirational woman looks like: someone who chooses to see possibility where others may see a problem; who protects dignity rather than adding stigma; and who stands beside a young woman and her vulnerable baby with the message:

"You matter. Your baby matters. Your education matters. And your future still matters."

Thank you, Shiluva, for caring deeply, showing up consistently and helping young mothers ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

cannot end without a massive shout out to Mpho Mazola Madi who is our HERO! A young girl arriving at Kids Haven many years ago - taking opportunities, being ready for anything and determined to work HARD to achieve success. Mpho - you are beautiful inside and out. You inspire us and many children with your commitment to wrestling, personal success, and your generosity to keep the circle turning by ensuring that children at Kids Haven are still wrestling. While throwing in a bit of hiking and mountaineering along the way!
Thank you for having us witness your happy day at your wedding.
We love how you are mothering your twins so that they thrive under your care and protection - once, you told us that you thought that abuse in a family was normal. Children didn't get to be loved and hugged. You discovered at that adults could care for children and that hugs are exactly what children need. You are a great mom giving your kids a great start.
Thank you for being one-of-a-kind and the best example of woman power! We love you ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™

The intersection of chaos that impacts children is brutal - a mother left to fend for her family after a violent attack and the death of a spouse. A mother forced to go on the run to avoid life threatening violence. A mother pleading for help and instead being sexually assaulted. A mother finding a way to secure safe transport at the cost of her own safety. A mother enticed into a 'way to help your family' only to find herself forced into work she would not choose to do. And in the background - some children. She sees her children and wants to protect them at great cost to herself.
These children witness the most awful brutality. They are not fine. They are numb. It takes a safe space, safe over and over and over again for days and months for these children to begin to emerge from the chaos. Once safe, they must connect with different adults who care, who nurture, who cherish and who love. Their mother is not a daily part of their lives for their safety. A mother's love taken to the limits.
It is difficult to imagine the choices that women face and have to make so that children can stay alive and take a step towards a normal life. Their collective resilience is astounding and we are grateful to be a part of the healing protection for their children. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

We must acknowledge grannies today. Grandmothers who take care of children on behalf of the family, often under really tough conditions.
It is not always easy to take care of many children when their mother chases them from her home, neglects them, hurts them or barely feeds her kids. It is not easy when absent fathers have moved on from these children or who have never been present at all. Grandmothers step into the gap.
Some grannies lose touch with their grandchildren when their mums move around, taking babies and children with them. These grannies are left out and so sad that they don't know where their own grandkids are. Other grannies do all that they can to take care of the children but can become overwhelmed.
Many of these children end up at Kids Haven because they are in need of protection and care. We are grateful to bring families together, tracing grandparents to provide family stability. Helping grannies to care for children over short holidays, less overwhelming and easier to manage. We honor all these grandmothers today who remain connected to their grandchildren ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

we pause our celebration of women to honor and appreciate this young man, Caleb who has passed away at age 29. This young boy joined Kids Haven along with his brother in 2011. Their personal struggles included significant physical disabilities which did not get them down. Caleb underwent significant surgeries in 2012 with the kind and generous help of Dr Eltringham at Sunninghill Hospital at no cost. Caleb prioritized his health and focused on body building, surprising spectators at competitions with his incredible strength.
We are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. He was a ray of sunshine and we remember him with great love ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™

and celebrating the growth from scared young girl to student loving life, growing in confidence and power.
We celebrate the power of this young woman who was abused in her home, moved to another family member but facing her abusers in the community over and over again. When people look away from doing the right thing there are long term consequences for children.
This young girl needed a safe space to live out her childhood, focus on her school work and create a better life for herself. We are glad to witness just how far she has come. Confident, outgoing, capable, dedicated and brave, she has taken on her university journey wholeheartedly. Living in res, only coming home during holidays, we are watching this young woman grow into exactly WHO she should be. There is hope ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™
