ROMOTE AND SUPPORT THE ARTS IN THE YUMA AREA

MSAA is a community of individuals consisting of artists of all levels and abilities that gather together to encourage and support each other in artistic endeavors. The purpose of this association is to develop and sustain a high cultural standard of art and artistic endeavors, and to promote close relationships between artists and the art loving public. MSAA is a diverse group of artists that gather together to exchange ideas, share creativity and knowledge with each other for the benefit of the members and Yuma Art Community. MSAA’s goal is to build an organization that supports the purpose of MSAA through monthly meetings, coffee get togethers, engaging with the Yuma public through our signature events and supporting others artists in the Yuma area through our Scholarship Program.

MSAA member Katie Winters recently completed this detailed drawing of a cholla cactus inspired by a hike in Sabino Canyon near Tucson.

Katie shared that this piece was a successful experiment combining colored pencil and pastel pencil techniques. The result is a beautiful study of color, texture, and the unique character of the desert landscape.

MSAA member Mark Wall is settling back into island life and finding his way back into the studio.

Between cabin projects, beach walks, reading, and time with friends, he’s been spending time working on a new series of oil and cold wax paintings from his Decatur Island studio.

Sometimes the best part is simply getting back to the work.

MSAA member Cathy Quinn recently shared this peaceful coastal oil painting inspired by a day of changing skies and shifting light while plein air painting.

“An outing a couple of weeks ago to a favourite painting spot started with a cloudy day and quickly turned to sunshine. My brushes couldn’t keep up with the changing sky but it was sure fun trying.”

11x14 oil on canvas. Beautiful work, Cathy!

MSAA member PJ Hagan recently added new fused glass work to the Umpqua Valley Arts Association gift shop in Roseburg, Oregon.

A few pieces from her display are shown here — colorful, playful, and full of detail. We love seeing our members sharing their art beyond Yuma and connecting with other arts communities.

MSAA member Arlene Towne recently spent time in Santa Fe taking part in a workshop focused on large-scale abstract expression painting.

Here’s a little glimpse into the process — paint everywhere, big canvases, lots of movement, experimentation, and creative energy.

We love seeing our artists continue learning, exploring, and making new work throughout the summer months.

Thanks for sharing these studio moments with us, Arlene. 🎨

MSAA member Melody Fearn has been busy in her studio.

Here’s her latest painting: 2025 Corvette Dash — a detailed 9” x 12” oil painting capturing the sleek lines and interior of the iconic sports car.

Even during the quieter months when our group isn’t as active, our artists are still hard at work in their studios, continuing to create and explore new ideas.

Thanks for sharing your work with us, Melody!

🎨 Supporting Young Artists in Yuma 🎨

Yesterday, a group of MSAA members had the honor (and difficult task) of recognizing outstanding youth artists at the Children’s Festival of the Arts exhibition. The show features talented students from grades K–12 across public, private, and homeschool programs.

As a proud sponsor, MSAA awarded:
• 30 middle and high school students with $25 Michael’s gift cards
• 21 elementary students with watercolor kits and paper

The student exhibit is now on display at the Yuma Art Center and is well worth a visit — a wonderful collection of young talent right here in our community.

The Children’s Festival of the Arts takes place:
April 18
10am–3pm
Historic Downtown Yuma
