This is a very basic beginner class, for students who have never soldered with a torch, or cut silver with a saw blade.
Students will learn basic skills to create a sterling silver pendant: measure and solder a bezel around a cabochon, solder the bezel to the base plate, trim and file the base plate, solder on the bale, clean and polish the metal, and set the stone. Bring a cabochon, or there will be some available for purchase at the class.
This class requires fine motor skills.
If you have any doubts about the compatibility of this class for your skill set, please reach out to me about other classes that would be more suitable for your skill set.
Minimum age 18 years old.
Cost is $65 for YVGMS Members, $80 for non-members, plus materials (approx. $50 -$100 or more by weight of silver and choices). Cash, check, PayPay or Zelle please at the end of class. You may become a member during class ($40 individuals, $50 family). Membership is on a calendar year basis from Jan 1 - Dec 31.
The cost of materials is around $50, depending on the size of your stone and the choices you make. You will be using .925 sterling silver and .999 fine silver.
The class may run long by 30-60 minutes for students to complete their projects.
All tools will be provided.
All stones should be uniform, round or oval, and cut properly, as it is difficult to learn using a stone that is too small, big, thin or that is not cut properly and will not bezel-up easily. The instructor will check your stones.
If you do not have a stone, the instructor will have stones for sale, which are a better quality for better prices ranging from $15 - $60.
Please bring cash as these are sold separately from the class fee.
For shop safety, please wear closed-toed footwear, no long sleeves, or sleeves that can be rolled up, and if you have long hair, a way to tie it back. You will be strongly encouraged to wear safety glasses to protect your eyes, which will be provided.

YVGMS is offering the following class:

Wire Wrap

9 - 1 Weds June 17th

In this class you will learn how to create an intricate pattern using sterling silver wire to wrap the pattern you create around a gemstone of your choice to make a one-of-a-kind necklace pendant! Most students have enough time and material to create
2 pendants.

$65 includes polishing cloth, and display box, NOT wire or cabochon, which are extra.

Non-members $80.

Bring a Cabochon to wrap or there will be Cabochons available for purchase, most are $5 each.

All tools will be provided.

4 Student Limit

This class is open to ages 14 and above.

Material used - You are welcome to bring your own wire, but this is what we have for you to purchase.

Wire : 16" 22 ga 1/2 round and 3' 22 ga square

Sterling Silver, $15 or Gold Filled Wire $25.50

Copper Wire $2.00

YVGMS June Meeting Thursday June 11th at 7 PM

This month for our educational presentation we will look at the similarities and differences between geodes, nodules, concretions, and bugs.
You are welcome to bring and share your specimens.

If you took a class, bring and show your silversmithed, enameled or wire wrapped jewelry!
If you cabbed or slabbed a cool rock, come and show it off!
Bring rocks and minerals you would like identified, and maybe you'll get some answers, or at least educated guesses!

Bring snacks to share during our break: cookies, veges, fruit, chips, etc
-Ways and Means Raffle - very interesting prizes - tickets $0.25 or 5 for a $1.00,
-Silent Auction featuring assorted slabs, rocks, and other cool stuff.
-Learn about upcoming field trips and club news.
-YVGMS Meetings are Free and Open to all – plus, we may have refreshments! Usually folks bring things to share.

Come join the Yucaipa Valley Gem & Mineral Society on Yucaipa boulevard near Adams Street. Will be there tonight Friday until 10:00, and on Saturday from noon until 9:00. Come crack a geode, spin the kids wheel for a prize, watch demonstrations, and get some great rocks and jewelry!
