This is a photo of four women playing volleyball on stilts at the beach in Venice, California, circa 1934. The three-masted tall ship in this photo has become of some interest to people commenting below. Venice Beach is less than a 2-mile walk down the beach south of the Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA walking down the beach. In 1935 Route 66 was extended from 7th & Broadway in L.A. along Santa Monica Blvd. then to the intersection of Lincoln & Olympic Blvd. The highway never officially extended to the Santa Monica Pier. (Fed. regulations required that a US Highway end at an intersection with another highway, in this case, US 101 Alt).
A comment says that the history of this photo said these people were from a circus that had come to town. Another just said that the circus winterized in Culver City, CA which is not far from Venice Beach.
