Yesterday, we switched out our yard. We use our 1941, 20 Ton, Davenport (originally U S Army) Switcher, to move everything. We put all but three pieces of our rolling stock on Track #1, then we put those last three pieces on Track #3. Why would you do that? A logical person might ask. Let me tell you a story…

Long ago, before the pandemic, in the Year of our Lord 2019, our intrepid track builders were still building track after Thanksgiving. Our weary track crew got a shot in the arm when an unemployed track guy showed up, and was willing to work by the day, for museum wages.

However, by the first week of December, the weather deteriorated, cold fog set in every morning, the days started at 38 degrees in the morning, drizzling rain off and on each day, a high of 42 on the afternoons. Our downtrodden track crew thought that they were in London… This went on for 3 days… They stopped putting ballast under the track, they didn’t put ballast on top of the ties, they just built it on the dirt. “We will jack it up and ballast it later,” they said! Well finally, here in 2026, it is later…. Track #2 is finally empty, except for the handcart, (that is another project, of course!). Let the leveling and ballast work begin!

Yesterday, we spiked down the rail on the left in our yard. This is our Track #3 and you can see the turnout for Track #4. We are making slow steady progress. If you are interested in learning about track construction, come join us! We work most Saturdays and sometimes during the week if workers are available.

As you can see, the guys got a little carried away. Instead of using just the track guage, lying in the foreground, they decided to roll a wheel set down to the end of the track! Boys will be boys…

From the collection of one of our members. On April 1, 1976, Congress made a pitch to save railroading in the N.E. United States & so formed the Consolidated Rail Corporation.
