Did Lafayette visit York. PA? Thanks to AI for this answer:

Yes, the Marquis de Lafayette visited York, Pennsylvania, twice.

He first came in 1778 to meet with the Continental Congress. He returned in 1825 during his national farewell tour, where he was honored with a grand banquet and famously toasted the "Town of York".His visits to York involved significant historical moments:1. The 1778 Visit (Continental Congress)Lafayette arrived in York in January 1778 while the Continental Congress was meeting there. The Mission: He was seeking a commission to lead a military raid into British-held Canada. The Gates House Meeting: He met with the Board of War at the Gates House to negotiate his terms. The Historic Toast: While dining at the Gates House, he famously offered a toast in support of General George Washington, helping to undermine the Conway Cabal (a conspiracy attempting to replace Washington).

2. The 1825 Visit (The Grand Tour)During his return to America as the "Nation's Guest," Lafayette passed through York in early February 1825 on his way to Harrisburg, and returned shortly after for a grand public celebration. The Banquet: A lavish reception and banquet with over 100 attendees was held in his honor at the Globe Inn on Center Square. The Toast: At the banquet, Lafayette toasted: "The town of York. The seat of the American Union, in our most gloomy times; may its citizens enjoy, in the same proportion, their share of American prosperity."

Sworn before George Washington on June 9, 1778, this oath of allegiance was taken by the Marquis De La Fayette, Major General in the Continental Army.
