The seemingly little victories mean the MOST when rescuing senior pets... ❤️

"Sometimes the things that get you emotional at this job are so surprising.

I was feeding Millie & Diesel tonight and watching Millie clean her bowl almost had me in tears.

I remember the day they got here and seeing Millie all whale eyed and scared sitting in the ISO yard. Then the following days of runny noses, turning said runny noses up at any and all food and treats. Diesel warmed up to our snacks and treats, but Millie’s took some extra time.

Seeing her locked in on a Kong the other day, taking meds in Pill Pockets, and taking treats from my hand excitedly today, and now cleaning her bowl - our sweet girl has come such a long way.

The journey from a shutdown and withdrawn dog to happy tail wags and insatiable appetites can be a lot, but it's so worth it to see something as simple as a clean bowl and get teared up about it LOL.

Love you Mills" 😘

If you visit our cat room and spot a suspicious lump under a blanket, that's probably just Molly Louise. ☺️

At 9-years-old, Molly has perfected the art of balancing adventure and relaxation. She spends her days exploring the catio, batting around toys, chatting with visitors, and collecting as many pets as possible. But when she's finished making her rounds, it's back to blanket time.

When she's not undercover, Molly is a friendly, affectionate girl who loves attention, enjoys being brushed, and isn't shy about asking for more pets with a gentle head bump. She's done well with other cats, has met a cat-savvy dog, and would love a family of her own.

If your home could use a sweet companion who doubles as a very adorable blanket lump, Molly Louise is waiting to meet you!

Our second annual Sit. Stay. Sip for Senior Pets is underway, and it’s a BEAUTIFUL night! 🍻🌤️

The bartenders at Sew Hop'd are tirelessly pouring, the delicious smell of Del Toro Street Taco is carried in the breeze, and Wall of Denial are rocking and rolling while our incredible YAH volunteers are selling raffle tickets like it’s no one’s business!

Tonight’s crowd is amazing!! Whether they came for our senior pets, the beer, the food, or the band, they’re all showing a little love - and it looks like they’re having a great time. We know we sure are.

Big Papa here. I've been very busy getting everything ready for Sit. Stay. Sip for Young at Heart's Senior Pets 🍺 tomorrow!

I inspected the venue. I checked on the food truck. I supervised the raffle baskets. I greeted people. I accepted pets. I looked adorable for promotional purposes. 👍

After all that, I'd say everything is just about ready for the big day.

Join us at Sew Hop'd TOMORROW, Saturday June 20th from 5–8 PM for craft brews, delicious food from Del Toro Street Taco, live music, raffle baskets, a 50/50 raffle, and a dog-friendly patio - all benefiting senior pets like me. 🍻🎟🌮

Admission is free, so I expect to see you there!

Sincerely,
Big Papa 🐾

If you're looking for a chill, tiny dog who minds his own business, 7-year-old Alfie is NOT the one for you. 🙅‍♂️

Alfie is the kind of dog who believes your unattended shoes are free game, recliners are not to be trusted, and sleeping under the covers with his humans is a fundamental right. He loves car rides, sunbathing, long walks, chew toys, and supervising the household from the top of the couch like a tiny gargoyle.

His foster mom describes him as the perfect sidekick for someone who appreciates a dog with a big personality. He's hilarious, incredibly smart, and convinced he's at least three times his actual size. Her recent Google searches include:

"Why is my Chihuahua trying to herd me?"
"How to get my Chihuahua to stop scaring my big dogs?"

To be fair, Alfie is working on his manners. He's learned to enjoy having his own little quiet space when life gets overwhelming, he's doing great with his routine, and he's discovered that maybe not everything requires a dramatic reaction. Growth!

But he will likely always remain approximately 90% sweet angel 👼, 10% lovable chaos goblin. 😈

If you've got a sense of humor and room in your bed, Alfie just might be your perfect match! Learn more about him and how to adopt: srpets.co/alfie

As our amazing community of supporters continues to grow, we thought we'd take a moment to share a little about Young at Heart's mission.

Meet Nonnie. He's 15-years-old, mostly blind, wobbly on his feet, and one of Young at Heart's newest rescues. We learned of Nonnie while he sat at animal control, waiting out the clock. At 15, with medical needs and no one coming for him, euthanasia was more than just a possibility.

Nonnie is exactly why Young at Heart exists.

Since our start in 2005, our mission has focused on rescuing senior dogs and cats from open-admission shelters. Our Founder and Executive Director saw firsthand how often older pets didn't make it out alive, with some dogs and cats losing their lives at just 4 or 5 years old simply because they were considered "too old."

The senior pets who enter these shelters have often run out of safety nets. By making them our priority, we're able to help those at the greatest risk and give them the comfort, compassion, and companionship they deserve for the rest of their lives through adoption or our Sanctuary Program.

We also know that Nonnie isn't the only senior pet who needs help. While our rescue efforts focus on older pets in open-admission shelters, we encourage our community to rally around seniors outside our care through sharing, networking, and our Courtesy Listings. Every old soul deserves the chance to be seen.

Every adoption, every foster home, every donation, every share, and every volunteer makes this mission possible. Because of this community, dogs like Nonnie don't become another senior pet euthanized because no one came for them. They get the chance to be safe, to be loved, and to grow old exactly as they should. ❤️

❣️ ADOPTED & LOVED ❣️

10-year-old Beauty and 11-year-old Evelyn are home!

These two sweet senior girls arrived at Young at Heart through very different journeys almost a year apart, but fate put them on the same path, headed toward Rhonda. Though she came in hoping to meet Beauty, it didn't take long for gentle little Evelyn to work her magic, and suddenly one cat became two.

Honestly? We think they hit the jackpot. A huge congratulations to Beauty, Evelyn, and Rhonda on their happy ending. We can't wait to watch this adorable little family settle into life together. 🖤🤍

Sanctuary senior Oreo is here to remind everyone that old pets can still surprise you. 🖤

When Oreo went to his Sanctuary Home, his mom figured he'd always need his own room and a carefully managed routine. After spending years living separately from other pets at the adoption center due to his unpredictable nature, it seemed like the safest and happiest plan for everyone.

Well, Oreo decided that was all a bunch of silly nonsense.

These days, the second his bedroom door opens, he's thumping downstairs as fast as his arthritic little legs will carry him. He wants to be part of the family, supervising the house from his favorite sunny window, attempting to snack on the lemon tree, and even relaxing alongside the other cats in the house.

Sure, there are still the occasional strongly worded arguments and short-lived slap fights. But for the most part, old man Oreo would much rather enjoy the comfort of his home and the cuddles from his mama than pick a fight.

His Sanctuary mom shared, "I'm so proud of him for overcoming his demons (mostly), and every time I watch him raise his sweet lil face toward the sun while he lies by his favorite open window, it gets me all mushy thinking about how far he's come."

Safe to say, Oreo is doing just fine. 😽

Millie (14) and Diesel (9) are feeling SO much better these days! ❤️

After arriving at Young at Heart with a nasty case of kennel cough, these bonded Labs are officially on the mend. Now that the meds have kicked in, they're back to doing what they do best - playing, smooching, and generally being attached at the hip.

With the worst behind them, they're getting the rest of their vet care squared away, including some much-needed dental work. Diesel is even rocking a cone after his recent procedure, though it hasn't slowed down Millie's attempts to kiss him directly in the mouth. Staff have politely asked them to keep the PDA to a minimum. They have declined. 🤣

These two sweethearts are feeling better every day and getting one step closer to finding their forever.
