ARTISTS

Entrants must be 16 or older and live or work in Queens. Some artists are emerging, and some are well known. Approximately 40% of entrants are selected as finalists. We originated the blind juried finalist process by jury or participating artists. All who enter shows become members. GRANTS • MONEY

We are self-sustaining from generous sponsors, fundraisers, and have accepted one grant in 14 years for the BLVD Film Festival, courtesy of a private foundation, unconnected to government or officials. We co-sponsored four film festivals with Thalia Spanish Theater, to launch festival founders Amanda Barker/Matthew Carlson’s BLVD, who now operate solely. A donation is made every year, approximately $500, to local food pantries and a donation to the Skillman and 43rd Avenue Winter Light Festival. This year during Covid quarantine, with the Sunnyside Chamber, we helped collect over $16,400 for four food pantries. Work sold at events has ranged from $1 to $2000, and 100% of funds are retained by artists. Underwriting the Luke Adams Fine Art Prizes, this year, $1000, $500, and $300, come from donors and artist entry fees (the lowest in Queens), raffles, and was set up for the Roel Vanderkooi Estate by Antony Kulzer.

We have just started sending this "Call to Artists & Crafters" out via email for the May 9 event to request applications. If you have not received it and would like to, or just make sure you are on the SA email list, please email your name and area of artwork or crafts to:

[email protected]

However, the information needed to apply is contained on this image.

We try to accommodate as many artists as we can, keeping a diversity of areas of artwork. Only 36 artists fit into the space.
••••••••

The image on the flyer as it says in the fine print on top, is by Vincent Van Gogh, "The Man is Sea," oil, 30 x 20 inches, 1889, which he painted after he put himself into a sanitarium.

He painted copies of 30 different works by different artists he admired to keep in practice. He said he painted this one for a sanitarium attendant. Virginie Demont-Breton painted the original work. The Van Gogh museum has recently acquired her painting along with his copy.

Note: This image is made more saturated than his or her work for the purposes of the flyer.
