Last Saturday, we were blessed with beautiful fall weather for EEN's Youth Engagement Tree Planting at Miriam Ortiz-Rush Park in Cleveland, Ohio 🌳🌲🌳

Thank you to the students from Calvary Reformed Church - Cleveland, Ohio and CityView Baptist Church, as well as our friends at the Cleveland Tree Coalition, who came together to plant 14 new trees in one day! We can't wait to see how they'll grow and bless this neighborhood in the seasons to come.

Yesterday's Environmentalists Were Christians. Tomorrow's Will Be, Too.

In Christianity Today, EEN's President & CEO Dr. Rev. Jessica Moerman draws on Robert Yi's (Global Leadership Network) book "Future Perfect" to argue that Christians are uniquely positioned to reclaim the mantle of environmental leadership.

"As Yi notes, churches are trusted institutions in the local communities where they serve and therefore are uniquely positioned to address environmental pressures impacting their local community. They operate across political borders without being subject to them. Their accountability traces not to an electoral cycle or a donor base but to God, which means their commitment does not expire when the cause becomes inconvenient."

Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it will soon release a proposal to weaken pollution safeguards that cut emissions of methane and other harmful air pollutants from the oil and gas sector. The proposal would rescind requirements for industry to monitor gas leaks and to limit practices that waste natural gas resources and emit health-harming pollutants.

“Families in oil and gas country should not have to wonder what is leaking from the wells and equipment near their homes, churches, and schools. The plan to weaken methane pollution protections means this worry remains a reality," said Dr. Rev. Jessica Moerman, EEN's President & CEO. "Leaking methane is not only a wasted product. The same leaks can carry benzene, and other harmful pollutants linked to cancer and birth defects, into the air that children and seniors breathe."

Thank you to everyone who was a part of this year's Summer of Action! As we head into fall, we wanted to take a moment to look back at some of this summer's highlights that you and your support made possible:

1. We had over 100 participants from 29 different U.S. states.📍

2. We engaged in 3 online trainings (which you can still watch online) and created 2 new advocacy toolkits. 🧰

3. Together, we sent over 500 messages to policymakers on critical creation care issues. 📢

4. We also sent 48 personalized, hand-written postcards to key decision-makers calling for stronger methane safeguards. 📬

5. We shared 8 stories highlighting the impact of America's national parks. 🏞️

6. Finally, we had 5 people write testimonies calling for good stewardship of our public lands. 🏕️

Last weekend, YECA and EEN teamed up to support Malone University's E-waste event! Electronic waste (or E-waste) is discarded electronic devices with sensitive chemical and metal parts headed for the landfill. EEN/YECA helped encourage the Canton, OH community to bring old machinery to for conscientious processing instead of tossing it in the trash!

After tabling, we got to connect with students directly through a listening session inside the Johnson Center for Worship. A very special thank you to Professors Eagle-Malone and Bryson Davis who helped coordinate this event!

Low-producing oil and gas wells = a BIG problem. Here are 5 things you need to know about them:

1. Low-producing wells (AKA “marginal wells”) are drillholes that extract very little oil and gas–at most 15 barrels a day but often less than 1 bathtub. 🛁

2. While they don’t produce much oil, these wells do create a LOT of pollution. Low-producing wells account for less than 6% of America’s fossil fuel production while creating more than half of all methane pollution from the oil and gas sector. 🛢️

3. In addition to methane, low-producing wells emit dangerous volatile organic compounds that can harm our health by polluting the air, water, and land around us. 🤒

4. Millions of people live in close proximity to low-producing wells. Nearly 1 in 10 people in the U.S. live in a county with over 1,000 of these wells!📍

5. The majority of low-producing wells are owned by large, highly profitable corporations with the resources to monitor and repair leaks (NOT “mom and pop” producers). More than 75% of these wells are owned by companies with more than 100 active wells. 💰
