What an incredible day! Our hearts are FULL, and we are so grateful to everyone who made this year’s 11th Cure SMA Virginia Walk-n-Roll such a success!

Together, we raised $28,000 to support the SMA community! Every dollar, every step, every roll, every donation helps move us closer to a world without spinal muscular atrophy.

Our 11th Annual Cure SMA Virginia Walk-n-Roll is TOMORROW, October 17th! We can’t wait to come together for an incredible day of community, smiles, and support for our amazing SMA families!

A FEW IMPORTANT UPDATES BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT!

🌳 NEW LOCATION! We’re moving our event area right next to the Bennett’s Village accessible treehouse - the future home of the Bennett’s Village All-Abilities Playground! This special place is being built in our own Bennett McClurken-Gibney's memory, and we’re so excited to celebrate together right where his legacy is growing.

🎃 DRESS FOR FALL FUN: Halloween costumes and festive fall outfits are highly encouraged!

🍬 TRICK-OR-TREATING: Get those costumes ready for some Halloween fun along the Walk-n-Roll path!

🪑 BRING A CAMPING CHAIR: Seating is limited, so bring a chair to relax and enjoy the festivities.

🏍️ CURE SMA MOTORCYCLES: Come check out the awesome motorcycles decked out in Cure SMA style - perfect for the kids to see up close and snap some pictures with!

✨ TEAM SPOTLIGHT – VIRGINIA IS FOR FIGHTERS ✨

At 18 months old, Kyle Derkowski was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) Type 2. There were no treatment options at the time and he was not supposed to live past the age of two. Back then, no one could have imagined just how far Kyle, and SMA research, would come.

Kyle has spent almost four decades living with SMA, adapting to challenges, pushing through obstacles, and continuing to build a life he loves. Today, he works full-time for an advanced technology company and is happily married to his best friend, Laura. Together, Kyle and Laura serve as leaders of the Cure SMA Virginia Chapter, turning their personal journey with SMA into a passion for helping others.

Since 2018, Kyle has been able to experience the difference that treatment makes by receiving the first ever treatment for SMA, Spinraza. Now, he is looking forward to starting another new FDA approved treatment for SMA in the coming months.

“I’ve been living with SMA for 39 years, and I’ve seen firsthand how much can change when people refuse to stop fighting. I’ve watched hope turn into real treatments, and I’m incredibly grateful for how far we’ve come and hopeful for the future."

On October 17th, Kyle will celebrate his 39th birthday surrounded by the SMA community that has been such an important part of his life.

✨ TEAM SPOTLIGHT - WAYZ WORLD ✨

"Three years ago, our world changed when our sweet Waylon was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) at birth. At one month old, he received Zolgensma, and today he continues treatment with Risdiplam. These treatments have changed his life in so many ways and we are beyond grateful.

Waylon continues to amaze us every single day. At three years old, he is constantly learning, growing, reaching new milestones, and showing everyone around him just how strong he is. His little sister Kannon is always by his side, and we couldn’t be more proud to be his mom and dad.

This year, our family held a Cruisin For A Cure event and raised $2,000 for Wayz World to donate to Cure SMA this year! Every dollar represents hope for families affected by SMA and helps support the work toward better treatments and a future without SMA. We are incredibly grateful for Cure SMA, Genentech, our medical team, and everyone who has supported Waylon and our family along the way. Our little warrior continues to show us that every milestone is worth celebrating!"

✨ TEAM SPOTLIGHT – RISKY BISCUITS ✨

Meet Logan - affectionately known as “Biscuit”!

Logan made SMA history as the very first baby in Virginia to be diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) through newborn screening. His early diagnosis meant he was able to begin treatment with Zolgensma at just 31 days old, giving him the best possible start in his SMA journey.

Now 4 years old, Logan continues to thrive and keeps his family on their toes with his adventurous spirit and big personality!

This year brought plenty of fun and new adventures, including playing tee ball and a family vacation to Florida. But some of his favorite things haven’t changed - he still loves being outside, especially camping and helping with yard work and he loves ice cream.

Logan’s story is a powerful reminder of why newborn screening matters and how early diagnosis and treatment can change the course of a child’s SMA journey.

We’re so proud to have Logan, his family and the whole Risky Biscuits team joining us for the 11th Annual Cure SMA Virginia Walk-n-Roll - we hope you will join us too!

🌟 Team Spotlight - Bennett's Village 🌟

SMA angel, Bennett Charles McClurken-Gibney, was a remarkable little brother, a silly friend, a loving cousin, and a playful son. At just five years old, Bennett passed away on February 28, 2018, but his spirit and joy remain unforgettable.

As Bennett turned one, he was diagnosed with SMA type 1. At the time, prognosis for children with SMA type 1 was grim, with few surviving past the age of two. Yet, with the unwavering love and support of his family, friends, and medical team, Bennett defied the odds. He shared a deep bond with his big sister, enjoying snuggles, disco bath parties, races, riddles, and Lego creations. Bennett shattered stereotypes about disabilities and enriched the world and the hearts of those who knew him with his boundless light.

In his power chair, Bennett experienced the freedom to run, chase, and play alongside other children. To reach an accessible playground, his family often traveled over an hour, as local parks and playgrounds were not designed for easy inclusion of children with varying abilities. In memory of Bennett, “Bennett’s Village,” an all-abilities playground in his hometown of Charlottesville, is being constructed at Pen Park.

The Cure SMA Virginia Chapter is thrilled to once again host this year’s Walk-n-Roll on October 17th at Pen Park, the future site of the Bennett’s Village All-Abilities Playground. This year, we’re taking it a step further by moving the Walk-n-Roll location right next to the completed Bennett’s Village accessible treehouse so we can honor Bennett’s memory, celebrate the SMA community and look forward to the inclusive playground that will soon make this special place even more meaningful for families of all abilities!

Please join us and the Bennett’s Village team to honor Bennett and all those with SMA that we have lost too soon.
