Tomorrow, Saturday, June 6th, is the Annual Kiwanis Sunrisers Taste of Downtown Winona. The event takes place from 1:00 - 4:00pm. Tickets to participate are $20.00. The headquarters tent will be located at 3rd and Center St. This is a chance to check out a number of downtown Winona restaurants and sample some of their food at each location. Circle K officers visit Sunrisers Membership Meeting
The Winona State University Circle K Club officers visited the Kiwanis Sunrisers membership meeting before the WSU semester ended to give an update on the status of the Circle K Club and its activities and events. The Circle K International Club (CKI) has been active at WSU for many years doing community service projects during the school year. CKI is a student-led service organization, with clubs on college and university campuses in 19 nations. Circle K has the same mission as all Kiwanis clubs around the world, which is: an organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Winona Kiwanis Sunrisers member, Craig Scheevel, serves as the Sunrisers representative advisor to the WSU Circle K club. WSU students who wish to serve the community and a chance to make friends are encouraged to check out the CKI club at the start of the fall semester.

Sawyer D. was recognized as the 4-Her of the Month at the May 20th Kiwanis Sunrisers Club membership meeting. He is a member of the Saratoga Challengers 4-H Club and has held the office of Vice President and President during his 4-H years. He is currently the Vice President of his club. Following graduation, he plans to attend the University of Wisconsin, River Falls to study Animal Science. Sawyer has exhibited swine, beef projects, crops and wildlife while in 4-H. His favorite project is exhibiting beef. His favorite memory over the years was exhibiting at the Minnesota State Fair where he received the Reserve Champion Senior Showmanship and Reserve Champion Simental Cow/Calf pair. Throughout his 4-H career he has also been involved in various community service activities with his club. Sawyer states that 4-H has taught him many things, but the most important has been the life skills of hard work and dedication to your projects. Presenting the award was Neil Broadwater, Sunrisers Club Secretary and club coordinator for the 4-Her of the Month recognition.

Donald Bittner (left) was installed as a new member of the Kiwanis Club of Winona, Sunrisers at its membership meeting held on May 6th. Conducting the installation was Bruce Nelson, club President Elect. Don’s sponsor for membership was his brother, Ken, shown in the second photo. Don Bittner is retired and has worked with the Boy Scouts for 25 years. He loves hunting and woodworking as well. The Kiwanis Sunrisers Club meets on the first and third Wednesdays at the Winona Family Restaurant. New members are always welcomed.

Food for Kidz Day –
The 22nd Annual Food for Kidz day was held Saturday, April 11, hosted and organized by the Stewartville Kiwanis club. Each year members from eight SE Minnesota Kiwanis clubs participate in this event. This year there were 259 Kiwanis and other volunteers helping to pack meals for hungry kids. A total of 113,280 soy and rice meals were packed during the day. Also, donations reached $21,985. During the 22 years of this activity over 2.5 million meals have been packed. The annual Special Athletic Competition event will take place on Friday, May 15 at Paul Giel Field in Winona. Ken Bittner, Treasurer of the Kiwanis Sunrisers Club of Winona, recently presented a check for $500 to Winona Area Public Schools representatives Wendy Harward (center) and Kayla Lager, who are on the core planning committee for the Special Athletic Competition. This will be the 51st year of the event which was started by the Kiwanis Sunrisers club and now plays a supporting role by annually raising funds for the event as well as participating in the awards ceremony. The event will feature student athletes from the Winona Area Public Schools and a number of other area school districts. Athletes will compete in various events during the competition. The public is invited to attend to watch the competition as well as the parade of all the athletes at the beginning of the event around 10:00am.

Sandra Burke, Executive Director of Winona Volunteer Services (WVS), receives a check for $1,125 from Ken Bittner, Kiwanis Sunrisers Club Treasurer, at a recent club membership meeting. It is given to support WVS food shelf that offers eligible residents with limited resources as a way to receive free food. The Kiwanis Club annually presents a check to the organization based on cash donated by individual club members and from fundraising events.

Brianna C. was recognized as the April 4-Her of the Month at a recent Kiwanis Sunrisers Club membership meeting. She is a member of the Saratoga Challengers 4-H Club and has held the office of Vice President and Secretary during her 4-H years. She is currently the President of her club. Following graduation, she plans to attend RCTC to achieve her AAS degree in Vet Tech. Brianna has exhibited cattle, dogs, crafts and photography while in 4-H. Her favorite project is showing cattle. Her favorite memory is attending the fair each year with her friends and being awarded Grand Champion market beef with her steer last year. Brianna has participated in the state fair a number of times for the dog project. She has also been involved in various community service activities with her club. Brianna states that she is thankful for the opportunities 4-H has given her as they have taught her many life lessons, responsibility, and leadership in many different ways. Presenting the award was Irvin Nehring, 2025-26 Sunrisers Club President.

Over several weeks Kiwanis Sunrisers members went into 26 classrooms and read to 845 4 and 5 year old children. Following the classroom reading each child was given a free children's reading book to take home and keep as their own. The readings were held in the Winona Area Public School district, public, private and charter. This is an annual Sunrisers Children’s Service project headed up by Committee Chair Bob Hermann.
