Derrick Petersen, 44, was sentenced on Sept. 30 to two charges of domestic assault, witness tampering, and multiple no-contact order violations. He pleaded guilty to the charges that stem from a June 19, 2025, incident that resulted in the hospitalization of two victims with significant injuries. The state’s attorney said Petersen attempted to contact a victim’s family member while he waited for his trial.

Petersen was on parole for a 2022 drug conviction during the 2025 domestic assault. The release states that Petersen has a 25-year criminal history that includes five prior felony convictions and multiple prior assault convictions.

Petersen’s penitentiary sentence will not begin until he finishes his 2022 drug conviction sentence.

A Vermillion resident was sentenced to 32 years in prison on multiple charges, the Clay County State’s Attorney said in a news release Thursday.
