The importance of art education extends beyond elementary school. High school students who take more art classes than required are more engaged in school and have higher attendance and retention rates. Therefore, they are more likely to graduate from high school. Additionally, students who participate extensively in art programs are more likely to be in academic honors societies and less likely to drop out.

projectART provides creative opportunities for teens, in addition to children and adults. Our flagship program, projectMENTOR pairs middle- and high-school students with professional artists for a month-long apprenticeship that culminates in a professional gallery exhibit featuring the students’ and mentors’ works displayed side-by-side. SIDExSIDE: projectMENTOR is still on view at ARTSPACE, and we encourage you to come by with your teen and see the possibilities! More information about the exhibit and our organization can be found at www.projectartwimberley.org.

ARTSPACE presents -flight- the sky, practicing us. This upcoming gallery exhibit pulls the audience’s eye to the sky, to flocks of birds, to the murmur of whispers in the air, to envelop us in togetherness and raise questions about our individuality in the face of nature.

To be part of things bigger than ourselves and yet remain tuned to our own precise experience are both acts of listening deeply to life. In this way, we collect. We pool meaning, memories, and make magic. Discovery of ourselves in the context of others, finding moments of meaning in a cluttered world, this is the impetus for -flight- the sky, practicing us.

Exhibiting artists include: Lindsey Bernier, Elan Blitch, Heather Carter, Sam Elkins, Jules Buck Jones, and Raylee Schobel.

-flight- will commence with an opening reception on June 26 from 6-8 pm at ARTSPACE. All ages are welcome!

Details can be found at www.projectartwimberley.org/flight or link in bio.

Are you a social-media-savvy college student who would like experience in nonprofit marketing and communications? Do you have an interest in art or art education? Read on!

projectART is looking for a part-time intern to provide assistance in creating content for social media and in serving as a gallery attendant at our contemporary art gallery, ARTSPACE.

We are seeking a college-level intern, majoring in communications or marketing, who can use this position as a mentorship opportunity. We see this as a valuable opportunity for those interested in a career in marketing and communications to receive real-world experience in the nonprofit and art sectors.

The intern’s responsibilities will be twofold:

1) Working closely with our Marketing and Community Outreach Manager to organize marketing campaigns and to create content and assets to support these efforts

2) Assisting the Executive Director in welcoming visitors to ARTSPACE, briefly describing the organization and art exhibition on display, and tending the register for any purchases from the gallery store.

Please visit www.projectartwimberley.org/joinourteam to view the job description and to apply.

During AANHPI Heritage Month, we at projectART are honoring the varied cultures of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander people during the month of May.

Since the 1970s, our country has recognized the contributions of Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Native Hawaiian communities. “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week” was signed into law in 1978. The observance has since expanded to the whole month of May and is now referred to as “Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.”

The rich history, art, culture, and food of AANHPI communities can be celebrated all month long with various activities around Central Texas, including the following art exhibits and installations:

- Echos of Home is a vibrant, multi-artist exhibit opening on May 29th at The Cathedral in Austin (thecathedralatx.com)

- Isamu Taniguchi Japanese Garden are peaceful gardens within Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin (zilkergarden.org)

- The San Antonio Museum of Art’s Asian Art Collection is among the largest concentration of Asian art in the Southwest (www.samuseum.org)

It was INCREDIBLE!

The opening reception of SIDEXSIDE: projectMENTOR couldn’t have been better! The energy in the room and the sense of community were palpable. The mentees’ cumulative feelings of accomplishment were buoyed by the pride their mentors had in them as they witnessed their students progress and change throughout the program.

Please please please take a moment this month to come by ARTSPACE to see for yourself the power of mentorship and guidance in a young person’s life. This is the stuff that makes us love what we do and keeps projectART going. You won’t regret it!

SIDEXSIDE: projectMENTOR will be on display until June 6 at ARTSPACE.
