The AFSP Out of the Darkness Race Team started out exclusively running in the Chicago Marathon but is now open to any runner or triathlete who wishes to race anywhere in the country at any distance. We have realized as we ran alongside thousands of marathoners and past the millions of Chicago spectators that we have found a unique way of helping to prevent su***de. The American Foundation for Su***de Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Community Walks help raise awareness of su***de by allowing su***de survivors and their friends and family to walk in memory of their loved one. We do the same by training and racing in jerseys with photos of our lost loved ones imprinted on the back, thus reminding us why we are racing and letting others know that we wish to remove the stigma of su***de. As a team member you will be part of a network of athletes committed to bringing su***de out of the darkness and remembering our loved ones while we strive to achieve personal milestones. Your $50 registration fee goes toward your fundraising minimum and allows you to receive a personalized AFSP Race Team jersey and an online fundraising Web page. To join our team, register for one or more races of your choice and then register for our team. It is important that you list your races and registration numbers in your team registration and keep us informed of new races. Many races provide special benefits to charities that have multiple participants, such as discounted training programs, post registration slots, cheering sections and inclusion in charity materials distributed to all registered participants.

Happy medal Monday, marathoners!!! We are so incredibly proud of all the runners who crossed the finish line of Bank of America Chicago Marathon yesterday, especially our amazing Race for Hope team who have now raised more than $986,000 for su***de prevention!

This World Mental Health Day the flat runners are ready and tomorrow our Race AFSP runners line up in Chicago with 26.2 miles ahead of them and a lot of hope behind them. đź’™

Since 2010, this team has turned miles into hope. This year we’ve raised just under $980,000 for the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention and AFSP Illinois Chapter and we are just about $22,000 from a record breaking $1,000,000.

Every runner is running for someone: a person they love, a person they lost, or the person they’ve become. Help us carry them to the finish.

Last night, our team had the privilege of joining volunteers from the AFSP Illinois Chapter to staff Rest Stop 2 at the annual American Foundation for Su***de Prevention Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk in Chicago.

As we welcomed walkers into the city throughout the night, we were reminded of the incredible strength, determination, and purpose that bring people together in support of su***de prevention.

And if there's one thing we've learned, it's that nobody knows how to cheer on long-distance walkers quite like a group of long-distance runners. Our team brought the energy all night long—with cheers, music, dancing, hugs, and plenty of food to help keep participants moving toward the finish line.

Thank you to every walker, volunteer, supporter, and crew member who made the night so special. It was an honor to be part of this powerful event and to support a cause that means so much to all of us.
