Come check out the celebrations happening at Fort Union for America’s 250th anniversary!

Tomorrow is the beginning of our 4th of July and 250th anniversary celebrations here at Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site. Join us for a reading of President Theodore Roosevelt’s July 4, 1903, Speech at Huntington’s 250th Anniversary.

If you are unable to make it tomorrow, join us on Saturday the 4th for a special reading of the Declaration of Independence at 12:00 p.m. CDT by one of our park rangers.

Throughout the two days we will be doing several crafts from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CDT.

The fort is open from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. CDT. We can't wait to see you there!

A message from Fort Union’s Supervisory Park Ranger:

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I just wanted to take a minute to express my extreme gratitude for everyone who came together to make Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site's 43rd Annual Rendezvous a great success. After months and months of planning and hard work, Rendezvous came and went.

We had nearly 3,000 people over the four days of Rendezvous. How incredible!

I would like to first thank all of our dedicated volunteers who came together to help support this event. Fort Union has a special group of volunteers, some of them volunteering all 60 years of it being a National Historic Site. Without our volunteers much of what we do would not be possible.

I would then like to thank all of our wonderful presenters who shared their knowledge of the fur trade site, crafts, and various demonstrations which really helped make the site come to life. Your expertise and willingness to travel, stay overnight and camp, and share is so appreciated. The camp really helps the site come to life.

A huge thank you to the Fort Union Association and executive director, Megan Halvorson, for all of her hard work and support for nearly every aspect of Rendezvous! She was especially crucial in helping with the 60th Anniversary Presentation on Sunday. We are so lucky to have your and the association’s support with everything.

A huge thank you to the Fort Union Muzzleloaders Association for supporting the event and the years of volunteering!

A special shout out to our Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa group for both helping the event as well as doing some much-needed trail maintenance on site! The trail to the river looks incredible and is so nice to be able to walk down. Thanks for being willing to assist wherever needed!

A shout out to all of our speakers who came together for a special 60th celebration of the anniversary of Fort becoming a national historic site. Your words were inspiring, and I can't wait to see what the next 60 years look like for the site.

I would like to thank the staff members who traveled short and long distances from other parks across the National Park Service to support this event. It was amazing to get to know you and work with you. Whether it was law enforcement, administration, interpretation, IT or management support. You are all incredible people, and the National Park Service is lucky to have you.

I would also like to thank our incredible staff here at Fort Union, who banded together these past two weeks and jumped right in to do so much dedicated work on making the event seem flawless.

Thank you to each and every one of you for being willing to jump in at whatever was needed in the moment, even if it wasn’t your job or division, and even seeking out how you could support each other and the event itself. You are all remarkable people, staff members, and the National Park Service is very lucky to have you.

To anyone who played any role in supporting or assisting this event, we appreciate you. Seriously, thank you thank you thank you!

We are so lucky to have such a great team, and I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish together the rest of this summer and year.

Rendezvous is right around the corner! We hope to see you there! ⛺️☀️🤝

The 43rd Annual Rendezvous is only 6 days away! Today we are featuring presenter, Doug Epperly.

Doug Epperly has been volunteering at Fort Union for several years and has been an amazing addition to our presenters during Rendezvous. His presentation on Plains Indian Sign Language brings history alive. This type of sign was used by tribes on the Northern Plains during trade at Fort Union. Most tribes would have their own languages, and it made communication difficult with the American/European traders at times. With the use of Plains Indian Sign Language, it became more manageable for both sides due to its simplicity and straightforward meanings.

Doug has been involved with living history for more than 30 years. He is a member of both the American Longrifle Association and American Mountain Men, two premier living history organizations. Doug’s primary focus has been on U.S. material culture from the French and Indian War through the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade era. Doug is also a student of Plains Indian Sign Language, an ancient language used by many tribes to communicate using “hand talk”.

The 43rd Annual Rendezvous is only 9 days away! Today we are also featuring presenter, Chris Floyd.

Chris Floyd has been a living historian for over 40 years and is a member of the American Mountain Men and several other organizations. He has been portraying a hunter at the fort and other historic figures throughout his time at the Rendezvous. The job of a fort hunter is important in the story of Fort Union because they were literally in charge of feeding the fort. Without their contributions, life wouldn’t be sustainable. Out in camp, prepare for a riveting tale of a fort hunter and his everyday life on the prairie.
