We are not just Firefighters we are also licensed EMS Professionals. EMT’s and Paramedics. EMS training is just as important on and off duty, to keep skills sharp. Especially skills that aren’t used every single shift. In addition to our on shift training, we have EMS students ride with us on our ambulances, we also have interns who ride as part of their Paramedic curriculum to get them to the point of testing and eventually licensure. Today the on duty shift worked on Advanced Airways and Cricothyroidotomy. Paramedics and field medical teams perform it as a last-resort when a patient is in a "can’t intubate, can’t oxygenate" situation. We are very fortunate to have some of the most advanced medical equipment available for these scenarios. Which help make obtaining an airway quicker, easier and more efficient!
(Yes, we normally would be wearing gloves when performing these procedures in the field, for our protection and yours)
