According to the PA Department of Health's regional report, about a third of the people living with HIV in our region were aged 65 and up at the end of 2023.

Breakthroughs in HIV treatment can help those living with HIV have long and healthy lives. Our region's population is a testament to that. However, HIV treatment only works when it's taken consistently. If you need help getting treatment or finding a treatment plan that works for you, contact us today at (570) 270-9110.

Did You Know? 💭

Unlike some other states, Pennsylvania does not have specific HIV laws regarding nondisclosure. However, we do have provisions. These HIV-provisional laws are rooted in stigma and make less serious crimes more serious because of one's HIV status.

HIV criminalization laws are harmful to people living with HIV. We envision a just and equitable future where all people living with HIV live free from fear and are empowered to lead, thrive, and shape the policies that impact their lives. This can be made possible by staying educated on policies and remaining connected with your community.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time for us to acknowledge domestic violence survivors and be a voice for its victims.

There is a clear intersection between HIV and DV. Evidence suggests that sexual and other forms of abuse against women and girls – whether at the hands of intimate partners or strangers – increase their chances of acquiring HIV. Another study looked at those already living with HIV and found that 24% of the female patients experienced physical abuse after disclosing their HIV status, and 45% feared such a reaction.

If you are experiencing DV, talk to your Case Manager. Help is available. ❤️

If around this time of year, you struggle with your energy levels, sleep, or overall mood, you could have seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

SAD impacts many people every year, and living with HIV can make this even more challenging. Fortunately, there are some ways to combat SAD, like:

💡 Light therapy
☀️ Vitamin D supplements
💬 Group or individual therapy
💊 Antidepressant medication

No matter what you’re feeling, know that you don’t have to face it alone. Get access to free mental health services through the Ryan White Handbook: https://northeastpahiv.org/community-resources/

Today is National Coming Out Day! 🌈

Sharing our authentic selves with others is not always safe or easy. And it's definitely not a one-day event. But, when possible, coming out can be an extraordinarily powerful key to breaking down the barriers we face as LGBTQ+ people.

No matter where you are in your journey, we wish you a full, rich, authentic life — a life free from bias, discrimination, and hate.

📣 ICYMI: Federal changes to SNAP benefits went into effect on September 1st!

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), previously known as the Food Stamp Program, is designed to help lower-income families afford food. New federal rules have changed who is eligible to receive these benefits. Most adults on SNAP are now required to work at least 20 hours per week, unless they qualify for an exemption.

Did You Know? 🤔

HIV and AIDS are not the same thing. HIV is a virus that attacks your immune system. Living with HIV does not mean that the virus has to progress to AIDS. That only happens when HIV is left untreated.

That's why it's important to know your status. When HIV is detected earlier, it can be treated earlier.

Another data point the PA Department of Health's 2025 Regional Report assessed was viral suppression. When people living with HIV undergo consistent treatment, the number of copies of the HIV virus (otherwise known as a person's viral load) is lowered. Treatment can make a viral load so low that it becomes undetectable by standard lab tests and untransmittable to others.

The report looked at people who were diagnosed by the end of 2022 and who were still living in our area by the end of 2023. Of those 1,495 people, 56.8% (849 people) achieved an undetectable viral load. This is right on par with the statewide average of 57.4%.

At NEPA Regional HIV Services, we want to help everyone living with HIV in our community reach an undetectable viral load. We offer free services and can connect you to treatment that works for you. Contact us today to learn more.
