Communities across Pennsylvania organized, fought back, and moved the governor to reconsider his stance on AI data centers — thanks to our efforts in Columbia Borough, Upper Macungie, Allentown City, West Hempfield, and Olyphant. As well as other organizers across the state.

We pushed back against big tech, called our leaders to stand firm, and now we have some of the strongest data center restrictions in the country. That win belongs to the people who showed up and let their voices be heard.

But let’s be honest about the gaps in Shapiro’s executive order. It does nothing about the tax incentives fueling this industry’s expansion into our communities. Early estimates put the cost to Pennsylvanians at over $2 billion in lost tax revenue by mid-2031. That money belongs to our schools, our roads, our communities — not to Big Tech.

That’s why we’re calling for a full moratorium on new data center development in Pennsylvania. No more projects approved while the real costs to our communities go unaddressed.

Pennsylvanians aren’t asking for nicer data centers. We’re not negotiating square footage or noise ordinances. They are unequivocally saying: we don’t want Big Tech in our backyards using our data to surveil us. They don’t want these facilities at all.

It’s Black August — a month to remember, study, and sharpen.

Anthony, one of our NEPA field organizer, opening the week with words from Assata Shakur. Her legacy reminds us why we organize: not for ourselves alone, but for all people.

This is the work. This is the commitment.

A message for Black August — from our community to yours.

Anthony, a Field Organizer with Pennsylvania Stands Up, wrote this powerful piece, and we want it to reach every corner of our community.

Black August is not a celebration. It is a commitment.

Black August is an annual commemoration honoring the lives and struggles of Black revolutionaries and activists. It began in the California prison system in the 1970s to honor political prisoners and slain Freedom Fighters — spanning Emancipation Day (August 1) to Fred Hampton’s birthday (August 30).

The four tenets of Black August are a call to all of us:

Study — Learn the true history of the struggle.
Fast — What are you willing to sacrifice to honor your Ancestors?
Train — Are you prepared to take action?
Fight — What will you do this month?

As Mumia Abu-Jamal wrote: “August — a month of injustice and divine justice; of repression and righteous rebellion.”

At PA Stands Up, we believe in the full liberation of all people. The Black community and working class communities are woven together — our struggles are connected.

Take time this month to study, fast, train, and fight — in whatever way you are called.

Thank you to Anthony for your powerful words. Learn more at pastandsup.substack.com.

Liberation requires organization. Let’s build it together.

Check out our newest Substack post! Our Statewide Communications fellow, Magnus Mateo Magnus Mateo has taken to their favorite written form, poetry, to explore the issues important to them.

This poem includes a snippet of their struggle when Magnus witnesses their younger sister come one step closer to homelessness. Proceed with tissues in hand; this one's a real tearjerker.

Pennsylvania Stands Up honors Disability Pride Month, from its roots in the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to present day organizing and advocacy. Equality still does not exist as long as disabled people in our country don't have the same rights as their abled peers, which is why we fight for disability rights all year round.

We want to build a Pennsylvania where we all receive the care we need and deserve. And at any point in our lives, we can and often do become disabled. Everyone has a place in our movement for people power, and that means putting in the work to make it accessible for everyone to participate.

Midterm elections are coming up this November, so use your voice and your vote to elect disability rights champions. Check your voter registration at the link in our bio or using the QR code in this post.
