Alex Parker of Parker Rock 'N' Dirt sat down with us for today's talk about Employee Retention to share some thoughts on how he approaches creating an environment that people want to stay in.

What do you see as a key quality of a good employer or leader, that makes people want to work with and for an employer in the construction industry?

There’s a misconception that construction careers take forever to break into.
Some do require multi-year apprenticeships. Some require licensing. And some? You can be working and earning in a matter of months.

Take a few examples:
A construction laborer can often enter the field with little to no formal schooling and build skills on the job immediately.

A heavy equipment operator might complete a short-term training program (a few weeks to a few months) or enter a 3–4 year paid apprenticeship, depending on the path they choose.

An electrician or plumber typically follows a registered apprenticeship, about 4–5 years, but earns wages the entire time while progressing toward licensure.

A construction estimator or project engineer may enter through a 2 or 4 year degree in construction management or a related field, though some work their way up from field roles with experience.

Different roles. Different timelines. Different entry points.

The bigger point is this...
There isn’t just one way into this industry. There are fast on-ramps, structured earn-while-you-learn tracks, and long-term professional pathways depending on your goals.

The lights don’t turn themselves on.

Someone has to bring the power in, make the connection, and make sure every part of the system is built to work safely.

It takes skill and precision.
And it carries a whole lot of responsibility.

Electricians are problem solvers. As experienced tradespeople retire and demand for electrical work continues to grow, the need for the next generation of electricians has never been greater.
