Mark your calendars now. Carols by Candlelight X is December 18 through 20 at the Savannah Center, and it is our club's largest fundraiser of the year.

This is the 10th anniversary show, and over the years it has raised more than $250,000 for our club's work. There will be music from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Santa and his elves, snow, and our very own club members singing and dancing on stage.

Tickets start at $33. More info is coming but for now, save the dates and plan to celebrate with us.

One of our speakers was one of our own, Scott Dudley, with a talk called Rotary: Not Just Lunch. Nearly 25 years ago Scott was enjoying weekly meals with the Rotary Club of North Whidbey Island, week after week, meal after meal.

Then came the 2007 wheelchair mission to Mexico, where he met Roberto, a polio victim who had been dragging himself back and forth to town. Roberto's life changed completely with his first wheelchair, and Scott says that is the day he went from being a Rotary club member to a true Rotarian.

Years later, when unrest kept him from a Haiti relief trip, Scott used the blocked week to visit 13 Canadian Rotary clubs instead. At club number nine, he learned a fellow Rotarian's husband was dying of polycystic kidney disease, and on the spot he offered to be the donor. He turned out to be a perfect match, and the transplant took place on May 14, 2014 at Vancouver General Hospital.

Scott calls the aftermath of good will and better friendships the ripple effect, and it is something we as Rotarians feel every day. Thank you, Scott, for showing us what Not Just Lunch really means.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and President Linda opened our meeting with a salute to fellow survivors.

Linda herself is a 10-year survivor, and she wore pink for the occasion, which she promised us is a rare sighting. Bob Lowell wore pink in solidarity too. Thank you both, and here is to every survivor in our club and community.

Welcome home, Diane. After a year, one of our most beloved long-time members is back with us, and the room was happier for it.

Diane is known for her singing, for her generous donations of art to the club, and for her famous hat collection. She also shared happy family news: her daughter, an Air Force Lt Colonel, is now stationed close by at MacDill in Tampa.

Diane, we missed you. It is so good to have you home.

New besties... at least until November 2. Avid Seahawks fan Shelley declared her Happy/Sad dollars this week for her new friendship with rabid Bears supporter Bob, who she met at the meeting.

They are all smiles now, but the Bears take on the Seahawks on November 2, so we will see how this friendship holds up. Building good will and better friendships, one friendly rivalry at a time.

And now for something completely different. There is a story behind this traveling chicken, which comes to us from the Rotary Club of North Whidbey Island Sunrise. Stay tuned, because our club may be implementing it.

More to come.

Our speaker stopped the room. Rick Townsend has volunteered with the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention since 2008, after losing his daughter Julie in 2001. He's a psychologist, and his message was simple: friendships are a viable antidote for su***de. Loneliness is the number one cause, and the highest risk group isn't teens, it's elderly white males. 48,000 Americans died by su***de last year. If you or someone you love is struggling, text or call 988. Thank you, Rick, for trusting us with Julie's story.

Service above self, hairnets and all. On September 10, thirteen of our members and spouses volunteered with Feed My Starving Children at Live Oak Community Church, packing meals for kids who need them most. Thank you to Betsy Kmiecik for arranging this one. This is what Rotary looks like.
