On this day in history Galvez was honored by the Continental Congress for his support of the American Revolution. He funneled weapons, gunpowder, medicine, funds and cattle from Spanish Texas to help George Washington. He kept the port of New Orleans open to American and French ships while cracking down on British smuggling. After Spain officially entered the war in 1779, Galvez led aggressive military campaigns across west Florida. His name was given to Galveston, Texas as well as St. Bernard's Parish. Galvez was awarded honorary U.S. citizenship in 2014. Huzzah Bernardo‼️🇪🇸

On this day in history, the women of Edenton, North Carolina led a protest against the tea delivered to their coastal town. There was no seizure or destruction, but the 51 women led by Penelope Barker signed a statement affirming their resistance to the tea and taxes. They even sent it to a London newspaper for publication! The Boston Tea Party is the most famous protest and certainly the most destructive but not the only one ever held. Huzzah to the ladies of Edenton‼☕️

📜🇺🇸 October 19, 1781: The British Surrender at Yorktown

After a three-week siege by about 17,000 American and French troops under George Washington and the Comte de Rochambeau, Lord Cornwallis surrendered his army of some 8,000 men at Yorktown, Virginia. A French fleet under Admiral de Grasse held the Chesapeake Bay, cutting off any escape by sea.

Cornwallis signed the Articles of Capitulation that day but stayed away from the ceremony, citing illness. Gen. Charles O'Hara offered his sword in his place, first to Rochambeau and then to Washington, who pointed him to Gen. Lincoln.

Yorktown ended major fighting in the Revolution and led to the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

Fort Graham worked hard today cleaning up the Veteran Memorial Park in Whitney. Dead plants pulled out, shrubs trimmed, weeds pulled, and new mulch laid out.

📜🇺🇸 October 2, 1789: Washington Sends the Bill of Rights to the States

One week after Congress approved 12 amendments to the Constitution, President George Washington sent copies to the governors of all 11 states that had ratified the Constitution. He also sent copies to North Carolina and Rhode Island, which had not yet joined the Union.

The amendments now needed approval from three-fourths of the states. Ten were ratified on December 15, 1791, and became the Bill of Rights. Several of the original letters Washington sent that day survive in state archives, including in Rhode Island and North Carolina.
