June 12 is Women’s Veterans Day. Because this historic day often does not get the recognition it deserves, the White Bear Lake VFW Post 1782, American Legion Post 168, with Col (RET) Laura Ludwig sponsored a ceremony at the beautiful Veteran's Park in Blaine, by the Women's Memorial.

Women have served in the military since the Civil War when they would dress as men to serve in combat. Women have served in a variety of roles in every US war; 250,000 served during the Viet Nam War and beginning in 2015, women have been allowed to serve in combat.

This well attended ceremony started at 6:00 with VFW Post 1782 Past Commander George Brown playing the call to attention on the Bos’n Pipe, making this a joint event. 4th District VFW Auxiliary President Deb Courts-Brown led us in prayer, Laura gave a great speech, and we had dinner close by at the VFW Post 6316 in Blaine. Thank you, Commander Corky, for hosting the dinner portion of the ceremony.

Members of the VFW, American Legion, DAV and VA all agreed to do this ceremony again in Blaine. We look forward to seeing you there on June 12, 2027!

Veterans from all branches of the service and friends, are invited to join us at 1800 (see flier for civilian time) Sunday, June 14th at VFW Post 1782.

Since this will be my last official function as Commander of this great VFW post before I become the 4th District Commander, I look forward to seeing many friends and comrades there.

Join us for cake, and some great Army music that includes: The Soldier's Creed, Toby Keith's American Soldier, and the Army Song. How can it get any better?

Service smack talk, with a smile, is encouraged among comrades.

The VFW Post 1782 Joint Installation of Officers was conducted in Veterans Park on June 7, 2026. The newly elected Commander, President and officers from the Post and Auxiliary were installed.

Past Post Commander Gary Carlberg mentioned the top three achievements (108% membership, our high level of volunteering, and care for veterans and their families), thanked President McFee for the good partnership and thanked the staff for a job extremely well done.

President Sara McFee thanked her staff, gave the Auxiliary Installing Officer a gift and was reinstalled as she is continuing as the President another year.

Incoming Commander Justin Frogner presented the past commander with a gift, then gave a powerful, yet short speech on how the VFW is like a family for veterans, and how we all need to continue to work together for the good of our veterans and the community. The new leadership officially takes over on June 21st.

VFW Post 1782 Commander Gary, VFW Auxiliary member Joan, and 4th District President Deb presented the Young American Creative Patriotic Art winner from WB HS on May 4th. In the photos, Hannah receives 1st place awards from Post 1782 & Aux and also the 4th District VFW award for 2nd place. Nice patriotic artwork Hannah!

In the past we have not had the success we would like with our Women's Veterans Day programs. While short notice, I really think this one has potential and is something we want to try on a small scale this year and consider making it bigger next year. All female veterans from the White Bear Lake area are invited to this VFW Post 1782 and American Legion Post 168 sponsored event.

The new memorial in the Veterans Memorial Park in Blaine is dedicated to “Honoring Women in Service.” It is believed to be the first of its kind in Minnesota that pays tribute to women Veterans.
The five-sided monument honors each branch of military service and features a flame on top, which symbolizes the fire that burns in the hearts and souls of women Veterans who defend freedom. At night, it glows with red and blue lights.

The Women's Memorial is in the Veterans Memorial Park, 10802 Town Square Drive Northeast in Blaine, MN. The monument was paid for, in part, by the 3M Open.

Event takes place on June 12th
Event in the park: social at 5:30 PM, program at 6:00 PM
Dinner: SGT John Rice VFW Post 6316, 1374 109th Ave NE, Blaine, MN. The meal is free for those female veterans who RSVP by emailing us at [email protected] and get a confirmation number.

We look forward to seeing men, women and children there. VFW Commander Gary Carlberg, American Legion Commander Bill Milashius and COL (Ret) Laura Ludwig.

My only question: Why have we not gone here before?
