NAMEPA’s Maritime Exploration Guide helps students discover the many ways that science, technology, engineering, the environment, and careers come together across the maritime industry.

Designed for students in grades 6–12, the guide introduces learners to the maritime world while helping them make connections between what they are learning in the classroom and the opportunities waiting beyond it.

Building the Port of the Future!

This week, we’re highlighting the Port of Long Beach, whose continued investment in infrastructure, innovation, and marine environment protection is helping shape the future of maritime transportation.

Under newly appointed Harbor Commission President Steven Neal, the Port is advancing an ambitious vision to double annual cargo volumes to 20 million TEUs by 2050 while working toward becoming a 100% zero-emissions seaport.

That vision is already taking shape through projects like the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility, which will triple Long Beach’s on-dock rail capacity and help reduce rail dwell time from four days to just 24 hours. The Port is also expanding its use of electricity, hydrogen, and methanol while exploring emerging technologies that could redefine port operations for generations to come.

As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, NAMEPA is highlighting the vessels, people, and stories that have shaped our nation’s maritime history.

The USS Constitution, affectionately known as “Old Ironsides,” is one of the most famous ships in American history. Launched in 1797, she is the world’s oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat and remains a symbol of American naval heritage.

The Constitution first saw action during conflicts with France before serving in the First Barbary War, where she helped defend American interests in the Mediterranean. Her most famous moments came during the War of 1812, when she defeated several British ships, disrupted enemy operations, and earned her legendary nickname after enemy cannonballs appeared to bounce off her strong oak hull.

After years of service and a period of neglect, the Constitution was restored and returned to the seas in 1844 for a global voyage. Her journey demonstrated America’s growing presence in international maritime affairs and showcased the skill and craftsmanship behind one of the nation’s greatest vessels.

Today, USS Constitution remains a living piece of maritime history, a reminder of the innovation, resilience, and dedication that have shaped America’s relationship with the sea for more than two centuries.

What is the most beautiful place in the ocean? While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, many people would answer: coral reefs.

Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, providing a home for countless species of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other marine life. But what many people don't realize is that coral itself is a living animal.

Coral is made up of thousands of tiny organisms called polyps, small, sea anemone-like animals that build hard calcium carbonate structures around themselves. Over time, generations of these tiny builders create the incredible reef formations we see beneath the waves.

These underwater cities provide shelter, feeding grounds, and protection for many ocean species. They are not only beautiful, they are also essential to the health of our marine environment.

However, coral reefs face growing challenges from rising ocean temperatures, changing ocean conditions, pollution, and other human impacts. Protecting these remarkable ecosystems requires understanding their importance and taking action to care for the oceans we all depend on.

The next time you imagine the wonders beneath the waves, remember the incredible world that exists within our coral reefs.

America's fight for independence wasn't won on land alone.

When we think about the American Revolutionary War, we often picture battles fought on open fields. But many of the conflict's pivotal moments happened at sea.

Although the British Navy was the world's most powerful naval force at the time, the Continental Navy and American privateers played a critical role in disrupting British supply lines, capturing enemy vessels, and challenging British control of the Atlantic. Leaders like John Paul Jones demonstrated how determination, strategy, and skilled seamanship could make a lasting impact, despite overwhelming odds.

Support from allies, including France, further shifted the balance at sea and helped pave the way for American independence.

The Revolutionary War reminds us that America's maritime heritage has been woven into our nation's story from the very beginning. The courage and dedication of those who served at sea helped shape history and continue to inspire the maritime professionals who keep our nation connected today.

Every captain started somewhere.

Behind every successful voyage is a crew working together to keep the ship moving safely and efficiently. Among them are deckhands, the hardworking professionals who handle everything from maintaining the vessel and assisting with cargo operations to supporting navigation and safety procedures.

While it's often an entry-level position, being a deckhand is far more than just a first job. It provides hands-on experience, builds valuable maritime skills, and can open the door to careers as officers, engineers, captains, and beyond.

Teamwork, responsibility, and a willingness to learn are at the heart of the role. Every task matters, and every crew member plays an important part in keeping global shipping moving.
