💅✨ Self-Care & Spa Day at Merrick House! 🧖‍♀️💖

The ladies of Merrick House enjoyed a relaxing at-home spa day filled with a little pampering, plenty of smiles, and lots of fun! From fabulous facials to fresh nail colors, everyone had the chance to unwind, feel special, and enjoy some well-deserved self-care. 🥰💅

In Loving Memory: Tamiko Morris

There’s no easy way to share this news. Our CMA family has lost a very special person, Tamiko Morris, who passed away on October 15, and our hearts are heavy.

Tamiko spent 22 years as a Direct Support Professional at the Tulip Residence. Twenty-two years. That’s birthdays and holidays, quiet mornings and long nights, good days and hard ones, all spent showing up for the people who live there. Tamiko knew them the way family does: what made them laugh, what worried them, and what they needed to feel safe and loved. She stood up for them every single time.

Tamiko was also a teacher at heart, even if she never would have called herself one. Over the years, she took new staff under her wing and showed them not just how to do this work, but how to do it with love. She never asked for credit. She just did it, because that’s who she was. This year, Tamiko had been chosen as a mentor in our new Pathway to Success mentorship program. It was meant to be a way of finally recognizing what she had been doing, so selflessly, her whole career. We are heartbroken that she didn’t get to step into that role. But her mentorship is already everywhere, in every DSP who learned from her and carries a little bit of Tamiko into their work each day.

We are thinking especially of the people who live at Tulip. Tamiko wasn’t just staff to them. She was part of their everyday lives, someone they trusted and loved, and that loss runs deep. We will be there for them with patience, gentleness, and plenty of room to grieve and remember in their own ways.

Tamiko was a wonderful DSP, but what we’ll remember most is the kind of person she was. Being a good person isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being kind when no one is watching, being patient when the day is hard, and caring for others even when life is asking a lot of you. Tamiko kept showing up for the people she supported, for her coworkers, and for her community. That’s what made her so special. The best way we can honor her is to keep showing up for each other, too.

To Tamiko’s family, friends, and everyone who loved her: we are so deeply sorry. Tamiko will be missed more than words can say, and she will always be part of who we are at CMA.

We went to Albany! 🎉

From October 15–17, the CMA Self-Advocacy Committee went to the SANYS Statewide Conference. We went to workshops, learned about our rights, and met self-advocates from all over New York State.

We also met OPWDD Commissioner Willow Baer and took a picture together! 📸

And we had fun too. We swam in the hotel pool and went out to dinner as a group. Traveling together and trying new things is part of being independent.

Thank you -Advocacy Association of New York State for a great conference. We can't wait for next year!

In Loving Memory: Rita Ogunnaya

Last month, our CMA family said goodbye to a very special person, Rita Ogunnaya, who passed away on September 17. As we continue to grieve her loss, we want to take a moment to honor the woman she was and the difference she made here.

Rita spent 10 years as a Direct Support Professional at the Carleton Residence. If you ever walked into Carleton while Rita was working, you knew it. You’d hear her laugh before you saw her, and then you’d get that smile. For the people who live there, Rita was someone they could count on: a familiar face, a gentle voice, comfort on good days and hard ones. She was patient and kind, and she always spoke up for the people she supported. She made sure they were heard, respected, and cared for the way they deserved. Rita’s compassion didn’t end when her shift did. She was also a counselor and gave so much of herself to her community. Helping people wasn’t just her job. It was who she was.

Rita’s legacy lives on here at CMA through her son, Patrick, a member of our Day Habilitation team. Anyone who knows Patrick can see his mother in him: her kind spirit, her love of laughter, and a smile that lights up a room. Patrick, we are so sorry. Please know your CMA family is holding you close.
