Our new 5 who just went to the outside cage yesterday made it thru the night. They enjoyed their puppy chow with some produce and hard boiled eggs thanks to our friends at the West Lafayette Payless.

5 more of our baby raccoons have been moved to their outside enclosure. They need to be weaned and 3 parvo/distemper vaccines first. Now they have room to explore. Let the fun begin.

Isn’t she lovely? After getting her bottle this little raccoon conked out. There is nothing cuter than a baby raccoon. This time of year people are finding babies and trying to contact wildlife rehabilitators to take them. This is our busy time of year. In Indiana there are only around 120 rehabbers in the whole state and a lot of rehabbers don’t do raccoons because they are expensive and time consuming. Keep calling rehabbers and don’t give up. Some places are taking them if they are weaned. (Off bottles). As tempting as it is to keep a baby raccoon don’t do it. The worst thing someone can do is raise a single baby raccoon. They won’t know they are a raccoon and will have trouble adjusting. In Indiana it is illegal to raise a raccoon without a permit. Help out your closest wildlife center and help us to help them.

This baby raccoon was loved to death. Yesterday morning someone brought us two baby raccoons that their friends dog had found. These babies were dehydrated and starving. The finder took them home and fed them warm cow milk!! This is exactly why rehabbers tell you to keep them warm and DONT feed them. If you feed a cold baby it is a death sentence. When we got these babies they were coated in black gunk from the waist down. It took a long time to clean them off and the wash cloth was so nasty I threw it out. They were so dehydrated it was really hard to sub q them and give them fluids. One of the babies had his eyes pasted shut from dehydration. I thought by last night they might survive but they were too far gone. When you find babies warm them up. Start contacting wildlife rehabilitators. This is our busy season and the majority of Indiana rehabbers are home based and only have so much time and energy. If you feel like you have to feed something make it Pedialyte or something along that line. Do not feed a cold baby period .

These two baby raccoons were rescued by Brian in West Lafayette. I don’t think we have ever had someone work so hard to save babies. He heard crying coming from a groundhog hole going under a concrete pad. He put a camera down the hole and saw a dead baby raccoon but he still heard crying. He broke up the concrete to save them and found two dead babies and two still alive. He warmed them up then got them to us. Great rescue Brian! When you find baby raccoons keep them warm and start calling rehabilitators and don’t stop calling until you find someone. You will find we are quickly filling up. Raccoons are very time consuming and expensive to raise. Volunteer for your nearest wildlife center so that they can take more babies. Help us to help them.

We got these baby raccoons earlier in the week from Lafayette. A finder heard them in their crawl space and put them out for the mother. The mother didn’t come back. Today they received their first distemper vaccine. They will continue getting vaccines every 3 weeks until they are about 16-18 weeks.
