Good morning everyone! It’s a beautiful, but warm day here at Des Moines County Regional Sanitary Landfill. At this point it’s slow but will definitely pick up as time progresses to the final incoming at 11:45. From this viewpoint we can see all the way down the road. I say this to the people that are kind enough to tarp when they get here. This doesn’t make any sense especially when normally it’s busy and we need lines moving efficiently. If you have the time to tarp when you show up here, why can’t you tarp from home? We are always watching you from up here. 😏 Please, just tarp from home. It’s a rule. Doesn’t matter the excuse. It only takes one time for something to fall out of a vehicle and make a day go crazy for everyone. Let’s all be safe!

Starting Monday, May 11th to Wednesday, May 27th, your friendly, neighborhood HazChem guy will be covering the scalehouse and will not be available for hazardous chemical appointments. Have no fear though, because if you have a TV, monitor or and electronic waste like computers and such, there will be someone to take those off of your hands for you! Reminder, TV’s are $15, monitors are $10, and any other ewaste is .25 cents a lb with a $5 minimum. Summer is here which means the landfill gets crazy sometimes. We appreciate all kindness in following alternating rules on and off the scale, tarping your loads (especially on windy days), and especially kindness to not only myself and staff, but to each other. We run very smooth with kindness and consideration for each other. We are open 8AM - 3:45PM Monday through Friday and on Saturday’s 8AM - 11:45AM.

Pro tip: On Saturdays, we get incredibly busy, so plan either an early visit, or a long wait as at times we get lines to our pond a quarter of a mile away from the scale. If you aren’t patient, may not be the day to come. Please don’t wait last minute if you don’t have to. 🙂

If you have any questions, I will be answering both phones while on the scale. The HazChem number is 319-753-8758. The DMC Landfill number is 319-753-8722. Please be patient as I could be taking care of 4 things at once. 😂

Here is some news for everyone from Burlington to know! Year-round bulky item clean up for Burlington!!! Instead of waiting for a certain time of the year, this will improve progress!!! See the post for more details!!!

We’ve transitioned from Citywide Cleanup to our Bulky Item Pickup Program.

All bulky item pickups must be scheduled using the online form:

Please do not call to schedule. The form ensures your request is received, tracked, and scheduled correctly.

Requests must be submitted at least two business days before your normal trash day.

I just happened to be on Facebook when I saw a post from someone that had questions about our rural Des Moines County cleanup. Here is the information below. Please notice that this is only for rural or country residents of Des Moines County. This is not for anyone in the cities of Burlington, Mediapolis, Danville, Middletown, or West Burlington. Important to note: DEMOLITION OR REGULAR HOUSEHOLD TRASH IS NOT COVERED BY THIS CLEANUP. This is also a cleanup setup by Des Moines County, not the landfill.

The Des Moines County Regional Solid Waste Commission is an intergovernmental 28E agency serving the Southeast Iowa communities of Burlington, Mt. Pleasant, Mediapolis, Winfield, Morning Sun, Danville, New London, Salem, Rome, West Burlington, Westwood, Middletown, and Des Moines County, Providing landfill recycling, ewaste and household hazardous waste disposal options. What this means is essentially, we are the Des Moines County Regional Sanitary Landfill by name, where we work closely with our community, but are not ran by a city or county. We are our own entity or business. We only accept the area waste.

I hope this post will find everyone well. The scale people are the ones that answer the phones and they can be very busy with many tasks. ✔️ Li-ion batteries
✔️ Small items with rechargeable batteries (cell phones, toothbrushes, etc.)

🚫 Please note: No lead-acid batteries (car, tractor, golf cart, etc.) will be accepted.

Beat the line by arriving as early as possible (we open at 8 am!) and if you're here after about 10 am, plan to wait in line for a while. You must be in the gate by 11:45 for service. Questions?
