Lenfest Scholars Foundation Helping talented rural students from south-central PA enroll and succeed in college.

Since 2002, the Lenfest College Scholarship Program (LCSP) has supported talented rural students from our partner high schools in southeastern and central Pennsylvania to enroll and succeed in college. Lenfest Scholars receive college scholarships, assistance in applying for college admission and financial aid, and advice and support throughout their college years. In 2014, the Lenfest Scholars Fo

undation (LSF) was established to administer the program. With the success of the LCSP in identifying outstanding Scholars and the Scholars’ success in gaining admission to selective colleges, the mission of the program has broadened. This expanded mission includes personalized college and high school advising, events and workshops, college visit funding, SEEF Program opportunities to enrich academic work or career planning, and access to our growing alum network upon graduation. The Foundation now works with 23 partner high schools and supports over 140 students currently in college, 40 new high school Scholars each year, and over 400 alumni.

SEEF Spotlight 🌎 Ricardo Acevedo, a 2023 Scholar at Duquesne University, used SEEF funds to study abroad in Rome, Italy.

Ricardo shares:
“My first day abroad is a day that has been etched into my mind as a permanent stepping stone in my development as a human being. I got to walk around the Roman Forum, visit the Flavian Amphitheater, and learn how it is rude not to take hours to eat during my first meal in Rome. My travels took me across Italy and beyond, where I experienced small, intimate moments with the culture and its residents. This experience was about learning how I fit into this world when I am no longer around the social structure I have been around my entire life.”

We’re excited to welcome Gena Rodriguez to the LSF Board of Directors as a Scholar Alum Board Member! 🎉

A 2010 Lenfest Scholar and 2011 graduate of James Buchanan High School, Gena earned her B.S. in Psychology from Ursinus College and her Ed.M. in Higher Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Gena currently serves as Director of College Counseling at Commonwealth School in Boston, where she leads the college counseling program and supports students as they navigate their post-secondary goals. Her career has also included roles with Eduventures and the Pennsylvania College Advising Corps.

Gena’s passion for college access was shaped in part by the mentors she found through the Lenfest Scholars Foundation, and we’re thrilled to have her bring that experience full circle through service on the LSF Board. 💙
