Thanks to all who joined us for our August 4th Saturday Restoration event!

Volunteers helped remove non-native invasive plants such as bindw**d (Convolvulus arvensis) and Harding grass (Phalaris aquatica) from the Struve Slough resotoration project site. Restoration staff members, Saira Ramos and Fernanda Ortiz, along with our Climate Resilient Monterey Bay’s Intern, Delaney Bray, aided in teaching volunteers to identify invasive and native plants. The removal of invasive plants contributes greatly to maintain native plant cover to enhance the slough habitats. During the second half of the event, volunteers helped mulching the planting site for better w**d control and help to retain soil moisture.

At our break, our education staff memeber Rodrigo Garcia and wetlands steward, Sophia, taught volunteers about invasive and native plants through solving riddles!

¡Gracias a todos los que nos acompañaron en nuestro evento de restauración del 4to Sabado de agosto!

Los voluntarios ayudaron a eliminar plantas invasoras no nativas, como la correhuela (Convolvulus arvensis) y mata dulce (Phalaris aquatica), del sitio del proyecto de restauración de Struve Slough. Saira Ramos y Fernanda Ortiz, miembros del personal de restauración, junto con Delaney Bray, nuestra pasante de Climate Resilient Monterey Bay, ayudaron a los voluntarios a identificar plantas invasoras y nativas. La eliminación de plantas invasoras contribuye en gran medida a mantener la cobertura vegetal nativa y a mejorar los hábitats de las humeldades. Durante la segunda parte del evento, los voluntarios ayudaron a cubrir con mantillo el sitio de plantación para un mejor control de malezas y para ayudar a retener la humedad de la tierra.

Our Wetland Steward Interns are back in action with Expanded Learning PVUSD at 4 different elementary schools this quarter to teach the youth about the Watsonville wetlands. 12 High school interns between 9th - 12th are excited to work with their student groups with hands on bilingual wetland focused activities to connect the students to the wetlands in their community.

Nuestros pasantes del programa *Wetland Stewards* han retomado sus actividades junto a Expanded Learning PVUSD en cuatro escuelas primarias diferentes este trimestre para enseñar a los jóvenes sobre los humedales de Watsonville. Doce estudiantes de secundaria (de los grados 9.º a 12.º) están entusiasmados por trabajar con sus grupos de alumnos mediante actividades prácticas bilingües centradas en los humedales, con el fin de conectar a los estudiantes con los humedales de su comunidad.

Many thanks to the Watsonville Works team Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County for partnering with us to care for young trees during the warm summer months. For the first few years after planting, shade trees need summer watering to stay healthy and establish a strong root system. We appreciate the program participants, Case manager / crew supervisor Rigo Nolasco-Shah, and Program Coordinator Veronica Ibarra for joining us in our work to expand the tree canopy in Watsonville. Trees keep our parks and neighborhoods healthy and cool!

Muchas gracias al equipo de Watsonville Works (Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County) por colaborar con nosotros en el cuidado de los árboles jóvenes durante los cálidos meses de verano. Durante los primeros años después de la plantación, los árboles de sombra necesitan riego estival para mantenerse sanos y desarrollar un sistema radicular fuerte. July was full of exploration, discovery and outdoor adventures at Watsonville Wetlands Watch!

Thanks to PVUSD Expanded Learning, we welcomed 32 PVUSD students for three weeks of Summer Camp filled with hands-on environmental learning. The campers explored local wetlands and beaches, discovered aquatic life, learned about birds, built garden boxes, created trash art, and connected with nature through fun, interactive activities. 

It was great to collaborate with our awesome community partners, including Bird School Project, Ecology Action, The Nucleus, and Shannon McCarthy with Pitch In Santa Cruz, who helped make this summer’s programming engaging, educational, and adventurous. 

Thank you to all of our campers, families, and partners for making this summer such a success!

¡El mes de julio estuvo lleno de exploración, descubrimientos y aventuras al aire libre en Watsonville Wetlands Watch!

Gracias a PVUSD Expanded Learning, recibimos a 32 estudiantes del PVUSD para un campamento de verano de tres semanas repleto de actividades prácticas de educación ambiental. Los participantes exploraron los humedales y las playas de la zona, descubrieron la vida acuática, aprendieron sobre las aves, construyeron cajas de cultivo, crearon arte con materiales reciclados y conectaron con la naturaleza a través de actividades divertidas e interactivas.

Fue un placer colaborar con nuestros fantásticos socios comunitarios —entre ellos Bird School Project, Ecology Action, The Nucleus y Shannon McCarthy de Pitch In Santa Cruz—, quienes ayudaron a que la programación de este verano fuera atractiva, educativa y llena de aventuras.

Watsonville Wetlands Watch staff, workforce development interns, and our California Climate Action Corps fellow, along with California Conservation Corps Monterey Bay Corpsmembers, are completing an urban greening project along Holohan Road in Watsonville, near the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency College Lake Integrated Resources Management Project. They are planting a total of 170 trees and shrubs, including bay laurel, manzanita, toyon, and elderberry, along with 18 California native plant species. The planting will beautify the roadway, provide shade and cooling, and offer habitat and forage for pollinators, birds, and wildlife.

El personal de Watsonville Wetlands Watch, los pasantes de desarrollo laboral y nuestra becaria del California Climate Action Corps, junto con los miembros del California Conservation Corps de la Bahía de Monterey, están llevando a cabo un proyecto de reverdecimiento urbano a lo largo de Holohan Road en Watsonville, cerca del Proyecto de Gestión Integrada de Recursos del Lago College de Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency. Están plantando un total de 170 árboles y arbustos, incluyendo laurel, manzanita, toyon y saúco, además de 18 especies de plantas nativas de California. La plantación embellecerá la carretera, proporcionará sombra y frescura, y ofrecerá hábitat y alimento para polinizadores, aves y fauna silvestre.

Thanks to all who joined us for the July 4th Saturday Restoration event!

The Restoration activities were led by our restoration staff, Saira Ramos, and CCAC fellow Fernanda Ortiz. Volunteers helped remove non-native invasive plants, Cape ivy (Delairea odorata), from the Pájaro River Picnic Area. This plant is toxic to some animals and fatal to aquatic life. Cape ivy is known to overgrow into tree canopies and outcompete native plant species. Together, we removed 4.5 cubic yards of cape ivy!

Volunteers had a chance to learn how to spot and identify poison oak and stinging nettle. They also learned about birds during the education portion of the event, led by education staff member Rodrigo Garcia.

¡Gracias a todos los que nos acompañaron en el evento de restauración del 4.º sábado de julio!

Nuestros voluntarios ayudaron a eliminar la hiedra del Cabo (Delairea odorata), una planta invasora no nativa, del área de picnic del río Pájaro. Esta planta es tóxica para algunos animales y para la vida acuática. La hiedra del Cabo tiende a crecer en exceso, invadiendo las copas de los árboles y compitiendo con las especies de plantas nativas. ¡Juntos eliminamos 4.5 yardas cúbicas de hiedra del Cabo!

Las actividades de restauración fueron dirigidas por nuestro personal de restauración, Saira Ramos, y por Fernanda Ortiz, miembro de CCAC. Nuestros voluntarios tuvieron la oportunidad de aprender a observar e identificar la hiedra venenosa y la ortiga menor. También aprendieron sobre aves durante la parte educativa del evento, dirigida por Rodrigo Garcia, miembro del personal educativo.

This month, we are partnering with the Nucleus at Marinovich Community Center to explore the amazing world of wetlands and wildlife.

This week, participants were introduced to wetlands and the important role they play in supporting local wildlife and healthy ecosystems. The program included an animal observation station and a hands-on arts and crafts project where participants build their own bird feeders while learning about the different types of bird species that live in our local wetlands. The session concluded with a discussion on reinforcing environmental stewardship and appreciation for nature.

Este mes, nos unimos a Nucleus en el Centro Comunitario Marinovich para explorar el fascinante mundo de los humedales y la vida silvestre.

Esta semana, los participantes conocieron los humedales y el importante papel que desempeñan en el sustento de la vida silvestre local y los ecosistemas saludables. El programa incluyó una estación de observación de animales y un taller práctico de arte y manualidades donde los participantes construyeron sus propios comederos para pájaros mientras aprendían sobre las diferentes especies de aves que habitan nuestros humedales locales. La sesión concluyó con un debate sobre cómo fomentar la responsabilidad ambiental y el aprecio por la naturaleza.

Join Jose, our bilingual Education & Outreach Specialist, at the Watsonville Public Library Main Branch on Monday at 5:30pm for a fun, family-friendly session on nature and gardening. He will read a story about seeds and lead an activity making native plant seed packets. We are happy to collaborate with the Library to promote their summer reading program - running through August 7th - “Plant a Seed, Read!”

Acompáñanos el lunes a las 17:30 en la Biblioteca Pública de Watsonville, sucursal principal, a José, nuestro especialista bilingüe en educación y alcance, para disfrutar de una divertida sesión familiar sobre naturaleza y jardinería. Él leerá un cuento sobre semillas y dirigirá una actividad para crear paquetes de semillas de plantas autóctonas.
